Fruit-flavored soaps make… things… burnish.” She could tell from the peeks at his face Mr. Fitzwell had never stepped foot in bath and lotion store, wanting to try the array of fun fragrances. Nor had he purchased Peppermint Candy shower gel, foamed up his nether regions, and felt like he had dipped them in lava. Dove crossed and uncrossed her legs at the memory.

Mr. Fitzwell seemed concerned. “Okay, just a heads-up. It’s definitely not good to put any fruits or plant life near your genitals.” He made a V with his hands and formed his own pretend vagina in front of his pants.

Dove covered her eyes and tried to defend herself because now she could hear the sickly older woman beating her supporters with a purse.

Dove’s mumbling got louder with her embarrassment. “I don’t put weird things down… there. Just make sure that the cream’s vagina-scented. Just plain. For vaginas.” She kept her eyes on the counter.

There are a lot of eyes in Debra Anastasia’s house in Maryland. First, her own creepy peepers are there, staring at her computer screen. She’s made two more sets of eyes with her body, and the kids they belong to are amazing. The poor husband is still looking at her after 17 years of marriage. At least he likes to laugh. Then the freaking dogs are looking at her—six eyeballs altogether, though the old dog is blind. And the cat watches her too, mostly while knocking stuff off the counter and doing that internal kitty laugh when Deb can’t catch the items fast enough.
           Debra has a smattering of books in a few genres. There are two in the Seraphim Series and three in the Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Series with a prequel, Poughkeepsie Begins in the near future. Fire Down Below is the first in the comedic Gynzaule Series. The second, Fire in the Hole, will be published in late 2015. The Revenger, a dark paranormal romance will debut this summer. My Review

 

I picked up this series because I got a deal on the first book from audible. It took me a while to read it. And while at first I wasn’t exactly into the story, it did take hold of me about 45% into the first book. After that, I was totally invested and power read through the series as all the books were available. That’s the beauty of reading a series when it’s complete.

First calling this paranormal is a stretch because this isn’t about vampires or werewolves. Or even demons or angels. I think this is more of a science fiction fantasy than a traditional paranormal book.

Mara has issues and no one believes her. This storyline can get frustrating as the reader knows she’s telling the truth. To have everyone around her not believe her can make for a hard read at times. Thank goodness for Mara’s brother. I think this is one the few times where a sibling especially a brother is the hero to his sister and makes such a huge impact on a story. And you have to love him for that.

But Noah wins me over by book two. And I think that’s my favorite book in the series. Book three is full of action and adventure but is largely missing Noah. And for the most part, because the story is moving, you don’t miss him too much.

Overall, I would recommend this one. There is a good story of love, trust, courage, overcoming obstacles, and adventures. I wish I could get more of the future of Noah and Mara without all of the other stuff.

My Review

 

 

Vlad was one of my favorite characters in the Night Huntress series. So when he got the starring role in a new series of his own, I was so on board. And I can say that this is my favorite book so far in his saga.

What I like in this one is that Lelia grows a pair. She stands on her own as a force to be reckoned with. She handles problems, makes decisions, mistakes and survives by her own cunning and wits. And Vlad decides what most important. (not that he hadn’t before). He just solidifies it in this one.

There is action and adventure in this story that reminds me of the early days of the Cat and Bones series. I can only hope it keeps getting better unless this is the last book in the series. And I will say we get a bit of Cat and Bones in this one. (exciting because we said goodbye their series).

Overall, this is the best book in the series yet. And I have high hopes for what’s to come.

Audio Review

Tavia Gilbert is one of the best. She knows how to deliver a line and her accents are spot on.

My Review 

 

This was a major disappointment. The first couple of chapters showed real promise. However, it fizzled from there. The blurb on this one (which I didn’t read until after) promised danger. Yeah, there might have been 1% danger in the book.

If based on the title, you might think you are getting a BDSM book. Guess again otherwise you’ll be disappointed. It is more vanilla than Fifty Shades.

What you will get is HOT Steamy sex scenes as Kresley does that very well. Unfortunately you won't get much more. No character development, no story arc, etc. There was much promise and didn’t deliver. If I judged this book on its own, I would give it 2 stars. However, I dole out 1 and 2 stars for special books. And on a whole, this book is better than those I’ve given those ratings. Thus three stars. The book just needed plot and it would have been a slam dunk.

Too bad.

Audio Review

Kimberly Alexis is the queen of sex narration, lol. She narrates the Anita Blake series, enough said. Other than that, she does a pretty good job with the accents. The Russian is spot on. The Cuban accent though was sometimes there, sometimes not. I wasn’t sure what to expect.

Fifty Shades of Grey movie ~ My Review

No preamble. Here is my review.

I need to set the stage for you before I dig into my review of the movie.

I am a lover of the Fifty Shades of Grey books. I read them once beginning in 2011. If memory serves, the first two books were out then (before all the hype) and the third was released in early 2012. If my memory is correct. (My review of the first book. http://www.mybookboyfriend.net/2012/01/best-book-ever-fifty-shades-of-grey-by.html) I’m not a re-reader, so I read them once. And 600 books later, I don’t remember them exactly. So did the movie change some things? Yes a few things I remember, but I wouldn’t be able to point out every change.

Second important thing to know about me is I’m not a lover of romance movies. I don’t go see romance movies on purpose in the theatre. I’ve watched some at home on cable. And Twilight, I thought that was a vampire movie much like Underworld based on the trailers when I went to go see it. Imagine my surprise. However, no matter your thoughts on Robert Pattinson and Kristen Steward, they pulled that movie off. I laughed when Rob entered the cafeteria, but I was spellbound after that movie was over. Why am I telling you this?

Glad you asked. I’m not a re-reader and I’m also not one to watch movies more than once on purpose either. There are a few movies I would watch on purpose more than once. And not Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter much as I liked them. But Stars Wars the original (episode IV) is one. And Sixteen Candles and Breakfast Club are another two. And Twilight. That was the only movie I saw more than once in theatres. And only the first movie in that series, not the rest. The soundtrack, I think also helped make that movie magic.

Enough background.

Why did I tell you all that? Because I wouldn’t see Fifty again in the theaters unless my friends convinced me too. It doesn’t make a bad movie. I loved Lord of the Rings trilogy and I wouldn’t have seen that more than once in the theatres.

Was it good? I think they did an excellent job of catching the spirit of the movie on screen. And there was chemistry between Jamie and Dakota, but it wasn’t magically. I didn’t fall in love after watching the movie. I will say I was previously a Dakota hater, but she did a phenomenal job. Jamie did what I expected. That’s not to say that Dakota’s acting job was better. It’s just she had a long way to go to get my respect and she did, so it feels like she did great. She felt like Ana. She did Ana justice. And Jamie’s wife, I can see why she wouldn’t want to see the movie. My god. I’m not sure he if he was an actor or model at the time when they married. However, having been on a movie set before and the number of takes; I can’t imagine my husband doing this movie and not causing relationship problems.

And I should speak to the haters. This book nor the movie abdicates violence against women. If anything especially the movie, they did a good job of going against violence. Nothing happens to Ana that she doesn’t consent too. Even the worst of it. And Christian makes sure to explain to her that she can leave or say No to anything at anytime. So haters, stop.

I’ve also been an advocate about the books being more than sex. That sex is a necessary plot element to the story and Ana & Christian’s relationship evolution and not sex just to make it erotica. However, I thought in the movie, sex took over. For all those that wanted a NC-17, I felt like there was enough nudity and other stuff for it to be a NC-17 rating in my opinion. And I think the sex may have stolen the movie and dragged it in spots. I thought there were other things that happened in the books that could have been put on screen to keep the movie moving and interesting.

With that said, I did like the movie and I will be there on opening night for each subsequent movie. However, I can’t say the movie was phenomenal. It was a better book to movie adaptation than say the Host by Stephanie Meyers. That was a great book and a horrible movie. Fifty was good, just not great.

If you’ve read the books, you should see the movie. If you’ve seen the movie, I would encourage you to read the books so you can really see the magic that is there.

Overall, I think justice was served as far as the movie goes. I just wish it would have knocked my socks off.

My Review
 

This is the first book of the year that I want to shout at the rooftops and recommend all to read. It’s also the first time in a long time that I’ve read such wonderful writing by a romance writer. And I don’t mean plot (although the plot was good in this one). I’m talking about the use of the English language. I think that technically awesome writing is lacking across the board in the romance genre. But not so in this book or by this author.

If you enjoyed the Gabriel series by this author, you will enjoy this one. That couple makes an appearance on more than one occasion between this novel and the novella that preceded it.

The story takes it’s time to layer up the world building and that’s expected in a paranormal story; or at least a very good one. We get to know all the players and potential problems, allies and enemies surrounding the main male character.

We also get the same by the female character. I truly enjoy how realistic her character is presented. Her plight is so believable I have no complaints. Sometimes, this is overlooked in other paranormal books be it paranormal romance (PNR) or urban fantasy (UF).

It is a slow burn book I must confess. But for me it’s easier to swallow. Confessions of love shouldn’t be made lightly and that consideration is taken for the most part in this book.

Overall, the plot is intriguing and kept me interested. The characters are well developed and go through a metamorphosis, and most importantly I was hooked. So much so, I could hardly do anything else for wanting to continue with the story. It was a sad moment when I realized I was so close to the end as I didn’t want it to. I can’t say much more without giving up spoilers. So go forth and read.
