Real Murders (Aurora Teagarden #1) by Charlaine Harris

Real Murders (Aurora Teagarden #1) by Charlaine Harris

This is an adult mystery novel (Rated R)

♥♥♥♥
(Four Fluffy Hearts)

Book Summary

Though a small town at heart, Lawrenceton, Georgia, has its dark side-and crime buffs. One of whom is librarian Aurora "Roe" Teagarden, a member of the Real Murders Club, which meets once a month to analyze famous cases. It's a harmless pastime -- until the night she finds a member killed in a manner that eerily resembles the crime the club was about to discuss. And as other brutal "copycat" killings follow, Roe will have to uncover the person behind the terrifying game, one that casts all the members of Real Murders, herself included, as prime suspects -- or potential victims.

My Review

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this novel. What I found out, the more and more I read of this author outside of Sookie Stackhouse is she’s not really a romance writer at all. She enjoys writing mystery. I’m beginning to wonder if it was her agent who pushed her to write the sexy Sookie Stackhouse.

I say this because there isn’t much in the way of romance even though a big part of the character development of Aurora is that she’s single and doesn’t want to be. She goes on dates throughout the book, but they are pretty much glossed over. There is no sex, and we barely get a glimpse at a kiss or two. So don’t go in looking for a love or romance story. More on this later.

What we have is a mystery that in a way took me by surprise. If I’d stuck to my initial who done it, I would have been right. But this author fooled me into thinking it was someone else. Bravo.

At the end I was wondering about the relationships semi-formed in the book. It was enough to get me to pick up the next book.

SPOILERS AHEAD – don’t read if you don’t want to know about book 2.

So by the end of this book, we are left to wonder will Roe end up with Arthur or Robin. Guess what, at the very beginning of book two, time has passed and neither guy is in the picture. I think because the author left it as a mystery/cliffy at the end of book 1 who’d she’d end up with, I was annoyed that we didn’t get to “see” what happened with either. So I decide to do a little investigation after she starts to date someone else in book 2. And come to find out this is a theme. At the end of a book, she with one guy and the beginning of the next, she’s moved on. All in all, I DNF’d book 2, not interested in going further. I read enough reviews to know how the 8 book series turns out and there are several plot holes with time passage. Like Roe’s brother is 6 in this book, Roe is 30. By the end of the series, Roe is 35 and her brother is 15. The math doesn’t add up where the brother is concerned. There are other problems in the book. And it’s almost like this author is forced to end the book a certain way and she doesn’t like it. So she does a piss poor job of it, like Sookie’s ending, lol.

END OF SPOILERS

Audio Review

Thérèse Plummer did a good job at narration. I didn’t have a hard trouble following all the different characters.

Overall, I liked this book but can’t recommend the series.

Dust to Dust: A Novel (Kovac and Liska #2) by Tami Hoag

Dust to Dust: A Novel (Kovac and Liska #2) by Tami Hoag

This is an adult mystery/crime/thriller novel (Rated R)

♥♥♥♥
(Four Sam Hearts)

Book Summary

Sorry. The single word is written on a mirror. In front of it hangs a Minneapolis Internal Affairs cop. Was it suicide? Or a kinky act turned tragic?

Either way, it wasn’t murder. At least not according to the powers that be. But veteran homicide detective Sam Kovac and his wisecracking, ambitious partner, Nikki Liska, think differently. Together they begin to dig at the too-neat edges of the young cop’s death, uncovering one motive—and one suspect—after another. The cloud of suspicion falls not only on the city’s elite, but over the very heart of the police department. Someone wants the case closed—quickly and forever. But even with their careers and their lives on the line, neither Kovac nor Liska will give up. As they unearth a connection between a two-month-old murder case and one that has been closed for twenty years, they find themselves chasing a killer who will stop at nothing to keep a dark and shattering secret.

My Review

I’m fast becoming a fan of Tami Hoag. I’d like to read more about these two cops. They are really well fleshed out. And after checking a few reviews, the first book in this series really didn’t focus much on them. So I’m not missing much.

This was a tough subject. I think the author could have done without several pop culture references that dated the book unnecessarily, like the mention of Rene Russo, who isn’t a big actress nowadays. There were several others. Without that, I wouldn’t have put it together this book was written so long ago.

Even though this book is about gay bashing and slightly about keeping in the closet, it still happens today. Thankfully, more and more people don’t feel the need to hide who they are.
There were several times in the story I wish the author had made different choices for certain characters because I felt bad for them. And this is a good thing because these are fictional people not human.

However, early on I decided the whos and the whats and was right. It was a little too obvious for me. I hope that future novels I read by this author aren’t so easily figured out.

I’m enmeshed in the lives of these two cops. I want them to have a HEA, so I’ll be reading on.

Audio Review
David Colacci did a good job at narration. The female narration wasn’t bad either. I didn’t have a hard trouble following all the different characters.

The Search by Nora Roberts

The Search by Nora Roberts

This is an adult romantic suspense novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a half Doggy Hearts)

Book Summary

The #1 New York Times-bestselling author presents a riveting novel where a canine search and rescue volunteer fights danger and finds love in the Pacific Northwest wilderness.

To most people, Fiona Bristow seems to have an idyllic life-a quaint house on an island off Seattle's coast, a thriving dog-training school, and a challenging volunteer job performing canine search and rescues. Not to mention her three intensely loyal Labs. But Fiona got to this point by surviving a nightmare...

Several years ago, Fiona was the only survivor of the Red Scarf serial killer, who shot and killed Fiona's cop fiancé and his K-9 partner.

On Orcas Island, Fiona found the peace and solitude she needed to rebuild her life. But all that changes on the day Simon Doyle barrels up her drive, desperate for her help. He's the reluctant owner of an out-of-control puppy, foisted upon him by his mother. Jaws has eaten through Simon's house, and he's at his wit's end.

To Fiona, Jaws is nothing she can't handle. Simon, however, is another matter. A newcomer to Orcas, he's a rugged and in-tensely private artist, known for the exquisite furniture he creates from wood. Simon never wanted a puppy-and he most definitely doesn't want a woman. Besides, the lanky redhead is not his type. But tell that to his hormones.

As Fiona embarks on training Jaws, and Simon begins to appreciate both dog and trainer, the past tears back into Fiona's life. A copycat killer has emerged out of the shadows, a man whose bloodlust has been channeled by a master with one motive: to reclaim the woman who slipped out of his hands...

My Review

I’ve read so many books, watched a lot of tv, and seen too many movies to count. So I’m not often surprised by plots. I mean there is just so many ways a romance can be told. But every now and again, I get what feels like a fresh take on love.

This is one of those books. In this story, the heroine let’s call her, isn’t a hidden beauty that sees herself as plain but she’s actually stunning. And the guy in this story isn’t exactly attracted to this woman. He’s used to stunners who are in the limelight of fame.

So what happens when these two meet? It’s not instant attraction. They both have lives and reasons for why they aren’t in the dating pool. They meet because Simon has a feisty dog, he can’t control. Let’s just say that’s the comic relief in this story.

Jaws is a fantastic addition to the story and poor Simon has no clue what to do. Along the way, a romance happens, but I won’t tell you how for spoilers. But let’s say there is a believability to it that adds credibility to the whole story.

But that’s not all. There is a mystery/crime element to this story that adds that level of danger and intrigue. This isn’t one the reader has to figure out the who done it as Nora will tell you who the killer is at some point in the story. But that doesn’t take away the threat.

I really enjoyed this story a lot. It will be added as one of my favorite books by her. After all these years, I wonder at this author’s imagination. So many books and I’ve read most of them. And she still manages to surprise me.

Die Again (Rizzoli & Isles #11) by Tess Gerritsen

This is an adult police procedural novel (Rated R)

♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a half Johnny Hearts)

Book Summary

The latest enthralling case in Tess Gerritsen's New York Times bestselling Rizzoli & Isles series, the blockbuster books behind the smash hit TNT series.

Boston Detective Jane Rizzoli is on the case of a big game hunter found dead in his apartment, alone with the body of a beautiful white snow leopard he had recently been commissioned to procure and stuff for a high-profile museum in the area.

Medical examiner Maura Isles connects the case to a number of seemingly unrelated deaths where the victims have all been found hanging upside down, the hallmark of a leopard's kill.

Rizzoli follows the puzzling trail of clues all the way to Botswana, where she uncovers the unsolved mystery of a deadly camping safari six years prior. When she realizes the two cases are connected, Rizzoli must track down the sole survivor of the tragic trip to discover who - or what - is behind these gruesome deaths.

Story Locale: Boston, MA

My Review

Mystery/Thriller/police Procedural books are my first love. How excited I’m to find a new author to add to my list of crime novel writers.

I found this author through audible’s daily deal. I picked it up not knowing it was the 11th book in a series. In fact, I didn’t find that out until I finished.

This story is told beginning with the past, about six years ago on safari in Botswana. I must admit, I found that part of the story far more intriguing than the present. Probably because in the present, the characters have already been flushed out as it’s a series and I’m new to the story. The past portion is being fleshed out, thus, I connected more with those characters. So this isn’t a flaw of the author as I was reading the series out of order.

At first I was fooled by the who done it. But I did figure it out before it was revealed. And Millie, the lead in the past portion of the story annoyed me because I never believed the killer in that portion was who everyone thought. And I thought she gave into that belief too easily disappointing me. And my heart hurt a little for the person wrongfully accused. I will say that although there was a little romance in this story, this isn’t a romance novel. So no HEA, which broke my heart some.

I will say there was some predictability in the story which is why I didn’t give it five hearts.

Overall, I am pleased to start this series from the beginning. Only the first book in the series isn’t available in audio. That means I will wait until it is or I will have to start with book two L.

Tanya Eby does a fantastic job with the narration. However, the female voices started to blend especially in the present portion of the story.

My Review

Mystery/Thriller/police Procedural books are my first love. How excited I’m to find a new author to add to my list of crime novel writers.

I found this author through his young adult series and decided because I liked those books so much to give his adult books a try. I wasn’t disappointed.

First of all, this story has woven into it several layers. There are so many twists and turns, you don’t see all of them coming. When you think you have it figured out, another twist slams you in the face.

The story is executed with precision with a believable plot that will keep your head spinning. The characters are carefully crafted and this author shows his writing chops aren’t a fluke but well-honed skills.

I’m excited to say, I wasn’t exactly right on the who done it. I love to be fooled and I was for the most part. I can honestly say, I’m looking forward to diving into the next book in the series and see what this author has to pull out for me.

For my romance lovers, the romance is very very light, barely in existence. So don’t pick up this book hoping for that.

My Review
This is an adult contemporary romance novel (Rated NC-17)
♥♥♥♥
(Four Solid Hearts)

Hold your panties ladies, this one is hot but don’t you expect that from this author. Our rockers love to get down and dirty and this one is no exception.

I must admit that it took a chapter or two before I was all into this story. Personally, I could have done without the beginning. I’m not sure how much value it added to the overall story. I would have started it when Toni met the band. It would have been more interesting and kind of funny to draw the reader in, but that’s me and who am I?

After meeting the band, I hardly wanted to put the book down and kept picking it up when I had to do the normal things life requires. I found Logan funny and he balanced out Toni’s serious side to his crazy outrageous one. I found myself rooting for them. (Please note, I went in without reading the blurb, so I had no idea going in which bandmate she would end up with. And I enjoyed the thrill of finding out.)

Besides the opening of the story, the predictability of what happened with the journal (if you’ve read, you know what I’m talking about) was a downer. Even though there were a few twists, the outcome was still the same. It reminded me a lot of Sed (sinner’s) story at least from the coverage of it (again you have to have read to understand. Trying to limit spoilers).

Speaking of that, I had some déjà vu moments during the world building of this series. I thought it was interesting and done a lot different than Sinner’s with the approach of us really getting to know each of the bandmates through interviews. However, that made me draw parallels, like Logan and Brian (Sinners) both being rather large in a certain area. (First books in each). Then there is Steve who past marriages and one not talked about had me thinking of Sed (Sinners) and his relationship with Jessica (sinners). And then there is Steve friendship with Zack (um, Brian and Trey??? Sinners), then there is Max who it was sort of kind of alluded to maybe he likes to be a dominant (okay, I totally inferred that). Only thing we are missing is an Eric (sinners) type voyeur.

Overall, I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next book which I assume with be Steve because Max and Dare on the surface seem like the top guys in the series. And frankly I’m okay with that. I really want to unwind this thing between Steve and Zach. Okay, so you must know that I’m a crazy Brian/Trey fan. I personally wish they would have taken Myrna as their poly thing. Or rather me, because if I could pick a fictional rocker to be in a man sandwich with, it would totally be Brian and Trey. Sorry Kellen Kyle fans, he’s swoon worthy and all, yes, yes, he is. But I would still choose Brain and Trey over him.

My book boyfriend Logan.

“Have a seat, Toni,” Dare offered. He stood and took a gym bag from her hand. He set it on the floor next to the spot he’d vacated, making it clear that Toni should sit next to Logan on the sofa. Logan loved the guy. Such a thoughtful son of a bitch. Toni’s dark eyes, hidden behind a pair of thick-rimmed glasses, scanned the interior of the bus as if searching for refuge. Apparently the seat next to Logan was not it. Dare plopped himself down in the only available recliner and extended the leg rest, as if he had no intention of moving for the night.
“Th-thanks,” Toni said, pushing her glasses up her nose with one trembling hand.
Logan wasn’t sure what she was so nervous about all of a sudden. She’d seemed perfectly at ease when they’d been interacting with their fans. Perhaps she’d taken his comment about a lamb in a den of wolves to heart. He’d only been teasing, but he found her skittishness endearing in a world where most women threw all inhibitions to the wind when in the presence of any member of his band, much less all four of them.
The bus rumbled as it rolled forward. They were on the road again. Toni’s hands flew out as the unexpected movement threw her off balance.
She plopped down beside Logan, perching on the edge of a cushion as if the sofa’s back was made of shards of glass. Logan was pretty sure she was looking for the emergency exit. Her gaze settled on Butch, who was standing next to their driver and running over a strict schedule detailing how to get them to their next show in time while making a promotional stop between venues. Their schedule never had an inch of give. Their manager, Sam, was a genius when it came to getting the band the most exposure, but he had the tendency to believe that because they were a metal band, they were made of iron. They didn’t require useless things like down time and rest.
“So tell us more about this book,” Dare said, which was apparently the exact right thing to say to Toni, because her unease evaporated instantly.
“Have you seen the new interactive electronic textbooks?” she asked, her eager gaze moving from Dare to Max to Steve.
Logan was very conscious of the fact that she didn’t look at him once. He’d thought their attraction was mutual, but maybe not. He scooted several inches closer to her because he saw something he wanted and wasn’t one to sacrifice his personal needs for the greater good.
“Textbooks?” Steve asked. “Like for school and shit?”
“Yeah, that’s usually where textbooks are used,” she said, a teasing grin on her lush lips. When no one laughed, her face fell. Logan forced a guffaw about five seconds too late. That got his bandmates laughing. Not at Toni’s understated joke. They were laughing at his blatant stupidity. Nothing new there.
“I can’t say I’ve even seen a textbook since high school,” Steve said.
“These new interactive ones are amazing. Each topic has videos and pictures and links. It presents the information in a way that gets students who are used to constant entertainment excited about learning.”
“So you’re writing a textbook about us?” Dare asked, brows drawn together in a confused scowl.
“What kind of textbook would that be? A manual on mayhem and debauchery?” Toni cringed when no one laughed at that joke either.
Logan guffawed five seconds too late again. He was going to have to pay really close attention to what she said to figure out when she was joking. He didn’t think she lacked a sense of humor, she just looked serious. She’d definitely fit in better at a library than at standup-comedy night.
“The publishing company I work for designs and distributes these interactive textbooks,” she said. “Samuel Baily approached us to make an interactive book about the band, the first of its kind. He’s very forward thinking.”
That got the band laughing. “You might say that,” Max said. “Sometimes he’s a bit too forward thinking. He’s got every minute of our schedules booked for the next eighteen years. He thinks we’re robots or something.”
Toni’s eyes bulged. “Eighteen years?” she muttered under her breath.
Surely she knew Max was joking, so why did she look so unsettled? Wondering if he could make her blush again, Logan scooted a few more inches closer to her. His knee brushed her thigh, and she yanked on her skirt. Other than her hands and face, not an inch of bare flesh was showing. He wasn’t sure exactly what she was trying to conceal. Maybe she wasn’t open to his attempts to seduce her. Which made her a challenge. Which, like her tits, he couldn’t resist. Or maybe she had a nice boyfriend at home. His loss.
“Speaking of robots,” Steve said. “How are the prototypes of our androids coming?”
“Good until they tried to replicate my dick and ran out of materials,” Logan said.
Toni’s sudden intake of breath made him grin. That shocked her? Seriously? Too easy.
“If they ran out of materials, it had to be due to Max’s giant forehead,” Steve said.
“Or your enormous feet,” Max countered.
Toni grabbed a pad of paper out of her bag and started writing furiously. Logan leaned against her shoulder to read what had her so excited. She was writing down their conversation. In the margin, she wrote: Keep video camera close at hand when all band members are together. They’re hilarious.
He was close enough to feel her body heat and inhale the sweet fragrance of her fruity shampoo. He wondered if she tasted as sweet as she smelled.
“For the record,” Logan said in her ear as he pointed toward her notes, “I was the one with the big dick.”
Toni leaped from the sofa as if it were on fire. Her gaze darted from one guy to the next, and she pushed her glasses up her nose with the back of her wrist. God, he wanted to take those glasses off, take those clothes off, and do things to her. Naughty, devious, delicious things.
“Um . . .”
The twin bumps poking against her shapeless turtleneck drew Logan’s attention.
Hard nipples? Did his crassness turn her on? That was all the encouragement he needed to behave inappropriately. Visible nipples also meant that her bra was not padded. There was so much win in that, he should have her name engraved on a trophy.
“What’s wrong?” Logan asked. “I won’t bite. But I will nibble. And suck. And lick.”
She stared at him with her mouth agape and her eyes wide. Her nipples strained against her sweater, begging him to do all those things and more to the tips of those luscious melons.
She glanced down at her tits and immediately crossed her arms over her chest. “Is, um, there a bathroom I can use?”
“At the back of the bus,” Dare said, nodding his head toward the end of the corridor.
“Don’t take a dump in there,” Steve said. “We stop at rest areas to do that business.”
Face flaming, she sucked in a deep breath, turned, and sprinted to the back of the bus. She fumbled with the closet door and when it popped open, a stack of towels that had shifted during transit tumbled out and pummeled her in the face.
Logan climbed to his feet to rescue her. He decided to take it easy on her for the moment. He wouldn’t want to traumatize her so much she decided to leave. They both bent to pick up the same towel at the same time and bumped heads. They jerked apart and rubbed their heads in unison. Toni looked up at him, her brown, doe-like eyes watery with tears. He wasn’t sure if they were tears of pain or humiliation, but seeing them in her eyes did strange things to his chest. He wasn’t sure why it was suddenly tight.
“It’s okay,” he said, deciding that though it was fun to tease her, he’d better tone it down a bit. She obviously wasn’t used to it, and he didn’t want to harass a woman who wasn’t receptive to provocative flirting. He hadn’t intended to upset her, just wanted to have a little fun and get under that conservative skirt of hers. “I’ll get the towels, Toni. You go ahead and do your business.” He opened the bathroom door for her.
She lowered her hand from her forehead to reveal a large reddened bump.
Logan winced and leaned forward to press his lips to the lump. She sucked a startled breath into her chest. Shit. There he went crossing the line again.
“Sorry,” he murmured. “I always kiss boo-boos.”
“I have a pimple on my ass that needs kissing,” Steve called.
Logan closed his eyes and shook his head. “One of the things you should consider stressing in your book is how little fucking privacy a man has while on tour with his band.”
“I can include that,” she said, “but I think fans are more interested in the size of your dick.” She backed into the bathroom. “I know I am.” She bit her lip before closing the door in his face.

Fury (Blur Trilogy #2) by Steven James

This is a young adult suspense/mystery/thriller novel (Rated PG-13)

(Four Wolf Hearts)

Book Summary

The disturbing visions that helped Daniel Byers solve a deadly mystery have finally quieted, and the sixteen-year-old basketball star is looking forward to things settling back to normal. But when his father mysteriously disappears, Daniel realizes that the key to finding his dad rests in deciphering his chilling hallucinations.

Soon, long-buried secrets begin to surface, revealing clues that could help him locate his father. But as the past collides with the present and reality begins to blur around him, Daniel faces a race against time to save his dad before it’s too late.

Filled with pulse-pounding suspense, Fury continues the thrilling young adult Blur Trilogy from bestselling author Steven James.

My Review

It’s so refreshing to read a young adult novel told by a male lead and written by a man. There is such truth and insight into the character. Daniel reads believable all the way through and I just love his character that much more.

This book is a semi continuation from the last book. Although we have a new mystery closer to home, we get more answers. I feel I’m rooting now for both Daniel and his Dad. And Daniel’s friends are just great.

Can I mention the romance factor in this story took it up a notch? It’s still not a romance novel or even a romantic suspense novel for that matter, but I thought I would mention. Again the romance is naturally occurring as an ongoing part of Daniel’s life but in no way is the center of the story.

Again, I picked the who done it but changed my mind so many times, I can’t even claim victory; which again is a good thing. I love to be surprised and wrong about twists in the story.

I’m bummed about having to wait until next year for the final installment. Parts of me wish the series wouldn’t end. And for those that don’t like cliffies. There isn’t really a cliffy. This isn’t a romantic entanglement story. So you can read without fear of cliff hangers and having to wait until next year for the final installment. There are however still mysteries surrounding Daniel that aren’t completely answered. But that’s the thing about series.

Audio Review
Nick Podehl did a fabulous job on narration. He easily slipped between male and female believably and kept all the main characters including some minor separate and distinct.

I’m never sure what I’m going to get with a new author, but this one knocked it out of the park for me. By the time you read this review, I’ve moved on from his YA series to his adult one.

Steven has created a rich lovable character in Daniel. He’s the school jock but clueless when it comes to girls which makes him so endearing. He’s also got a got head on his shoulders and a good heart despite the rejections he fills from being abandoned by one of his parents.

Let me just say to all my romance lovers, there is a little romance in this book but it’s organic to the story. It’s a part of Daniel’s life not the center or the crux of the plot. So if you’re looking for that, you might be disappointed. This story is about Daniel and all the mystery that surrounds him and strange things that happen as he solves a mystery. And I should mention his merry band of friends that help him along the way. They are also well constructed.

I can honestly say that yes, although I guessed the who done it; I guessed that person along with several other, never really deciding on any one. So the author did a good job of keeping me guessing.
Overall, I was anxious to start the next book in the series to get more answers about Daniel. Since I’m reviewing that book tomorrow, I won’t say more.

Audio Review
Nick Podehl did a fabulous job on narration. He easily slipped between male and female believably and kept all the main characters including some minor separate and distinct.

My book boyfriend Daniel.

The Liar by Nora Roberts

The Liar by Nora Roberts

This is a romantic suspense novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a half Lying Hearts)

Book Summary

The extraordinary new novel by the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Collector.

Shelby Foxworth lost her husband. Then she lost her illusions …

The man who took her from Tennessee to an exclusive Philadelphia suburb left her in crippling debt. He was an adulterer and a liar, and when Shelby tracks down his safe-deposit box, she finds multiple IDs. The man she loved wasn’t just dead. He never really existed.

Shelby takes her three-year-old daughter and heads south to seek comfort in her hometown, where she meets someone new: Griff Lott, a successful contractor. But her husband had secrets she has yet to discover. Even in this small town, surrounded by loved ones, danger is closer than she knows—and threatens Griff, as well. And an attempted murder is only the beginning …

My Review

Nora Roberts has to be the Queen of Romance. And even after hundreds of books written, she still manages to entertain me every time. I’m not saying every book is a knock em out of the park. But every book leaves me satisfied. This story was no different, and in fact, I was smitten with this story the whole way through despite the predictability of the ending.

I love how she manages to create rich characters and brings them all to life. Hell, I was ready to move to the Smokey’s right along with the rest of them. Parts of me want to know more about other characters brought up in the story. But I have a feeling this is a straight standalone, which is too bad.
If you’ve never read a Nora Roberts (or J.D. Robb) book, you can’t go wrong with any of them. Some of my recent favorites of hers are this one of course. Then there is Chasing Fire and The Collector.

And I really liked this one and the journey that went along with it. She takes her time telling this story and doesn’t rush it for page count. And I could appreciate how that made the characters stand out and ones I’m not likely to forget.

Audio Review
January LaVoy did a wonderful job with the narration. I didn’t have any problems following along.

The Fall and Rise of Kade Hart (Hart Brothers #4) by A.M. Hargrove

The Fall and Rise of Kade Hart (Hart Brothers #4) by A.M. Hargrove

This is an adult contemporary romance (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a half Kade Hearts)

Book Summary

The is a Stand Alone novel with an unexpected twist. If you think you have the Hart Brothers figured out, this book will change everything. If you like your novels to have a smooth ride, do not read this!

This book contains sex and language not intended for younger readers.

"Hello, my name is Kade Hart and I’m a drug addict." Isn't that what recovering addicts are supposed to say? Hell, if I know. I’m not sure about anything anymore. Not since I met her. Juliette. She's my game changer.

I’ve lived on the streets, been in places no one ever wants to see, survived pure hell with the bastard who raised me. I thought I'd finally managed to put all that behind me, come to terms with who and what I am. Until she walked into my life. She’s running from the people who slaughtered her family, people who want her dead, too, and she makes me want to be the kind of man who can protect her, who can save her. But I'm not sure I’m that guy. I'm no one's hero.

Or am I?

If she asks me why I love her, I wouldn’t be able to tell her a single reason. Because there isn’t one. There are dozens. All wrapped and merged together to create my special love for her. I’ve often heard the phrase, “She stole my heart.” Something can’t be stolen which is freely given and I have not only given her mine, I have laid it at her feet.

My Review

Poor Kade who has been through hell and back, falls for the wrong girl. A nun. Go figure. Poor guy hasn’t had a whole lot of good in his life and now this. But this story just isn’t hearts and flowers, there is mystery and intrigue to keep the story entertaining on all levels.

Our nun, Juliette, isn’t the girl who dreamed of giving her life to God. Circumstances have placed her life with those that serve the lord.

Still, the attraction between Kade and Juliette is sacrilegious. Yet, you’ll find yourself rooting for them all the way. And their relationship as it develops isn’t a smooth ride for either of them. And they won’t’ cross certain lines (for the religious types including myself) very easily or without thought.

I won’t spoil the story, but the author gives us an option at the end of the book that’s new and exciting way of writing. I happen to have taken both paths and either works really really well.

This isn’t some simple love story. It’s complicated with twists and turns of the Hart (get it, heart, lol). Anyway, if you haven’t read a book by this author, you should give her a try. One of my other favorites by her is Tragically Flawed. Anyway, pick this one up.

My book boyfriend is Kade. (And he’s smoking hot). I have it on good authority this is the author’s vision of the character.

Beautiful Player (Beautiful Bastard #3) by Christina Lauren

Beautiful Player (Beautiful Bastard #3) by Christina Lauren

This is an adult contemporary romance

♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a half Will Hearts)

Book Summary

A bombshell bookworm. A chronic Casanova. And a lesson in chemistry too scandalous for school.

When Hanna Bergstrom receives a lecture from her overprotective brother about neglecting her social life and burying herself in grad school, she’s determined to tackle his implied assignment: get out, make friends, start dating. And who better to turn her into the sultry siren every man wants than her brother’s gorgeous best friend, Will Sumner, venture capitalist and unapologetic playboy?

Will takes risks for a living, but he’s skeptical about this challenge of Hanna’s…until the wild night his innocently seductive pupil tempts him into bed- and teaches him a thing or two about being with a woman he can’t forget. Now that Hanna’s discovered the power of her own sex appeal, it’s up to Will to prove he’s the only man she’ll ever need.

My Review

Although this book isn’t a total friends to lovers story as they weren’t friends from way back, it still has that heart to the story. And what a friend Will turns out to be. I love Will because he’s a no-nonsense guy who’s open about what he feels. He tells the truth so everyone is on the same page.
Hanna, on the other hand, is clueless but has crushed on Will longer than he saw her more than his best friend’s little sister.

For the most part, this story is great and I ignore the misunderstandings due to lack of communication. Mostly because this author duo makes it ring true and fit with the story and personality with the characters. However MINOR SPOILER, the last misunderstanding where there is total breakdown in communication didn’t ring true for me. I can’t see how either character says nothing.

Unfortunately, that sort of ruined things for me. When they resolved things, I wasn’t smiling. I wasn’t happy. It took the last few lines to draw out a smile for me because I was ready for the couple not to be together if they couldn’t overcome their communication issues. The fact that someone else had to point out the obvious and she couldn’t figure it out on her own, also bothered me. It’s fiction and most won’t have the same issues I had with the story. But I read too many books. Therefore, I’m a little picky.

However, all in all, I really liked this one and wish that I could give it five shiny hearts.

Audio Review
Grace Grant and Sebastian York do a good job with the narration.

Overall, you should probably pick this one up. One of the better books I’ve read this year.

My book boyfriend Will.
