A Special Obsession an all new contemporary romance from A.M. Hargrove is live!!

ASO_full copy
Rule Number One: Never let anyone get too close…
Weston Wyndham has more money on his tattooed wrist than I’ll ever have in my bank account.
Drunk, he was gorgeous, wicked, sexy, an inked god.
Sober, he is the most arrogant man ever.
If he thinks I’m going to let him order me around like one of his servants, he’s wrong. If he wants me to date him after all this, he’s out of his mind. I don’t care how rich he is, or that he drives a Ferrari and a fancy truck. Those walls I put up are there for a reason … and they were built to last.
But he’s relentless, and hot, and it turns out he likes his girls a little fiery. Giving in doesn’t have to mean disaster—unless I break my number one rule.
Special O’Malley is a handful. With a name like that, she ought to be. Sassy as hell, bossing me around, but damn if I don’t deserve it.
I’m used to getting my way, dealing with difficult people, only she’s not buying any of it. Usually my money attracts women. Not Special. She doesn’t give a damn about it … or me.
There’s more than one stubborn player in this game. I have a few tricks up my sleeve and I’m not planning on giving up any time soon … at least not until I’m between her thighs, making her moan. And those concrete walls she has … I have news for her. Concrete crumbles if you strike at the right place.

Unique World - Etched in Bone (The Others #5) by Anne Bishop

Etched in Bone (The Others #5) by Anne Bishop

This is an adult urban fantasy novel (PG-13)

♥♥♥1/2
(Three and a half Simon hearts)

Blurb....

New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop returns to her world of the Others, as humans struggle to survive in the shadow of shapeshifters and vampires far more powerful than themselves…

After a human uprising was brutally put down by the Elders—a primitive and lethal form of the Others—the few cities left under human control are far-flung. And the people within them now know to fear the no-man’s-land beyond their borders—and the darkness…

As some communities struggle to rebuild, Lakeside Courtyard has emerged relatively unscathed, though Simon Wolfgard, its wolf shifter leader, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn must work with the human pack to maintain the fragile peace. But all their efforts are threatened when Lieutenant Montgomery’s shady brother arrives, looking for a free ride and easy pickings.

With the humans on guard against one of their own, tensions rise, drawing the attention of the Elders, who are curious about the effect such an insignificant predator can have on a pack. But Meg knows the dangers, for she has seen in the cards how it will all end—with her standing beside a grave.

My Review

This series should have been an easy winner. The world building is unique and interesting. So much so I didn’t need this farce of a romance to enjoy. In fact, I think this “romance” detracted from the series instead of enhancing it.

With each book, I grew impatient for something to happen with what the author kept dangling in front of our face like a carrot. To me, personally, I felt like the “romance” took away from the story/series. I think if romance wasn’t there, (and I’m pro romance in books, just not this one), I think this could have been better.

Simon and Meg could have had the same dynamic if he saw her as a little sister/ pack and not a potential mate. BECAUSE, that’s what it felt like through most of the series anyway. The “romance” was added like an afterthought. It was as if the author didn’t want it, but her publisher/editor demanded it. To meet that quota, she created a snippet of romance in the beginning and ending of each installment, that went nowhere for 95% of the book (the middle).

What’s worse, I read a few reviews that suggests this book is the last. If so, I’m doubly disappointed. After five books, investment of time and money, I needed an epilogue not a promise of a future. We got that promise the last several books. I want a resolution and a decisive ending about what happens.

Also, let’s talk just about just this book. Nothing really happens. For most of the book, it reads like daily diary entries. Meg wakes up, has breakfast with Simon, they go to the market square, she works, has lunch with Mary what’s her name, then she goes home with Simon, they sleep (him in wolf form) rinse and repeat.

The addition of the added character to be a female officer in another town goes nowhere and adds nothing to the story. We knew the others were more progressive than the humans??? So what was the point? This is no spoiler as if again does nothing for the plot arc.

The predictability of what little action that does occur, happens so late in the book, it’s so obvious a blind person would SEE it coming.

And honestly, I didn’t get the point of Jenny getting a package at the end. What did that character do that warranted her receiving that package???

And I didn’t get the tie in with the title to the story.

Well, at least I was able to finish the book. And that’s more that I can say for several books I’ve started and haven’t finished so far this year.

Audio Review

Alexandra Harris does a good job with narration. A lot of her male characters sound the same, which can be confusing at times. But overall, a good job.

My book boyfriend Simon.

Review

I love this series. I can’t say it enough. This book took me out of my book funk. And I’d started many books by beloved authors, but I couldn’t get into a one and I started and stopped several times.

This book I’m proud to say held my attention from the start. I listened in two days.

I love Mercy and I loved getting Adam’s POV. The story was interesting creating questions and answering others to keep my focus solely on this book.

My only problem was with the middle when the author goes out of sequence. She makes not of it several times. At the beginning and when it happens so the reader is well aware. However, for me, I think that going out of sequence didn’t enhance the story. It didn’t provide that aha moment. In fact, I think it made things more predictable than less. It would have been better if she would have just gone linear.

That’s my only complaint and why I can’t give it perfect marks. Otherwise, I just wish there had been more. Now, what is a girl to read?

One thing to note --> This book brought me out of my blogger funk because it was that good.

Audio Review

Lorelei King narrates. I often forget I first heard her read this series. Luckily, this time I heard only Mercy’s voice and not Charlie Davidson. It’s interesting how similar but not these two series are. My only complaint is addition of a new narrator who is fantastic by the way. However, when he spoke as Adam, I didn’t buy it. He didn’t sound as alpha as Lorelei made him. Which made it hard to accept. But his other characters and accents were flawless.

My Book Boyfriend is ADAM.

My Review

There are a few reasons why I can't give this full marks. But mostly the book chilled me and had me eagerly turning the pages to find out how things would turn out. I'll probably be thinking about this one for a while.

I spent one day reading the hardback copy sent to me by the publishers. I’d briefly read the blurb in order to sign up to read it, but I’m not a blurb reader. I like to go in blind. Thankfully, by the time the book showed it, I didn’t quite remember what the book was about.

So I dived in. And within a day’s time, I’d read the entire book. This book doesn’t disappointment in entertainment value. It was worth the read for sure.

What was lacking? I think I needed more of what happened in the end. We see the stage set for events and then it skips to tell us the results. I needed more. I wanted that satisfaction of knowing more. Considering the POV, I know that is hard. But some authors on occasion will switch POV, thus giving us that extra. It’s hard to explain without spoilers. After the journey, I needed that little bit.

Otherwise, this was a spectacular read. I recommend it.

My NOT book boyfriend is Jack. (I went with Jamie as inspiration because I just finished the series the Fall and his character seems fitting.)
