Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade #1) by Jennifer Estep

Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade #1) by Jennifer Estep

This is a young adult urban fantasy novel (Rated PG-13)

♥♥♥
(Three Magic Hearts)

Book Summary

There Be Monsters Here. . .

It's not as great as you'd think, living in a tourist town that's known as "the most magical place in America." Same boring high school, just twice as many monsters under the bridges and rival Families killing each other for power.

I try to keep out of it. I've got my mom's bloodiron sword and my slightly illegal home in the basement of the municipal library. And a couple of Talents I try to keep quiet, including very light fingers and a way with a lock pick.

But then some nasty characters bring their Family feud into my friend's pawn shop, and I have to make a call--get involved, or watch a cute guy die because I didn't. I guess I made the wrong choice, because now I'm stuck putting everything on the line for Devon Sinclair. My mom was murdered because of the Families, and it looks like I'm going to end up just like her. . .

My Review

From the opening page, the plot was too damn predictable for me. I knew the bad guy by the first few things he said. There weren’t many surprises at all. Worse yet the main character Lila was forgettable and not very likable.

I get that she’s a teenager. I get she had to fend for herself and doesn’t have the tools for relationships. But her ‘I hate him, I want him, I can’t have him, I might feel for him, I shouldn’t want him, he’s got to go’ annoyed the heck out of me. She’s a teen. Yet she acted like any sort of relationship with this guy would spell forever. And she’s street smart enough to know better.

Besides predictability and an annoying character, there was a glaring plot hole. I’m going to spell it out because I don’t think it’s that big of a spoiler. Lila tells the reader she’s left her cell in her purse back in a parking lot she’s fled. She tells us as a reason why she doesn’t use it during the action. When the action is over but not the scene, she says she pulls her cell out and makes a call. (JIC, it’s between Ch28 & 29). It’s a glaring mistake that someone should have caught.

Overall though, there are some questions I still have. And the world building was interesting enough for me to continue. However, book two may be it if things don’t progress. I’ll have to cut my losses if that book doesn’t work out.

Audio Review
Brittany Pressley does a great job at narration. She nails the spirit of all the characters.

Sabin, A Seven Novel by A.M. Hargrove

Sabin, A Seven Novel by A.M. Hargrove

This is an adult sci-fi romance novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥♥
(Five Sexy Alien Hearts)

Book Summary

This is an Adult soft sci-fi stand alone novel that contains sexual scenes and language, making it unsuitable for younger readers. This novel contains hot aliens. You have been warned.

The Seven have a code: find and protect Judgment Day (a weapon of mass destruction that poses as a harmless necklace) and the ones who possess it at all costs; and never, under any circumstances, divulge information about ourselves.

I have always abided by this code. Until Serena Callahan, a sassy, no-nonsense female, found the damn choker, and now I’m the one being choked by my own emotions. Ever since the day she entered my life that code has meant nothing to me. And for the life of me I can’t figure out why I’m allowing a damn woman to lead me around by her slender finger. The rules have changed and she’s calling all the shots only she doesn’t know it. But if we can’t find the necklace soon, none of it will matter anyway.

My name is Sabin and I am the commander of The Seven.

My Review

This isn’t my first alien novel by this author and I’m glad she’s jumped back in with another new sexy alien novel.

For all the fans of X-files, V, Roswell, this book is probably for you. Also, if you’ve grown out of YA and loved the Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout, you’re going to love this.

Talk about Alpha male, that’s what you have in Sabin. Add a dash of feisty female and you have a mix that will make you laugh and squirm (sexy time) in all the best ways. It also has action. These aliens aren’t sitting around doing nothing. They are busy saving the universe too.

I can’t say too much because I hate giving spoilers when it’s not necessary. This read will deliver. You will be entertained. And you’ll probably want to pick up other of her sexy alien books when you’re done.

Overall, this is a solid read and I totally recommend.

My book boyfriend is Sabin.

The Pull by Sara V. Zook

The Pull by Sara V. Zook

This is an adult contemporary romance (Rated R)

♥♥♥1/2
(Three and a Half Pull at your Hearts)

Book Summary

Having two women wanting you at the same time … isn’t that every man’s fantasy? Wrong. It’s a nightmare, at least for Darin Thorne. The doctors had assured him his wife was going to die, sooner or later, so he’d moved on with someone else. Then he’d gotten the last call he’d expected to ever get—his wife was back from the dead. She’s coming home from the hospital and needs a place to stay. Darin is forced to invite her to come home with him. Two women living under the same roof, one his wife, the other his fiancĂ©. Could this ever work? Darin feels a storm brewing in his life. He can’t possibly live like this much longer. The question still stands … which woman will he choose?

My Review

I met this author at a signing this year in Hershey. I talked to her about her books and decided I would have to read this one day. The day has come.

The question of the story is this. What happens when a wife wakes up from a comma after many years to find her husband has moved on? I have to tell you that alone pulled me in. I love drama and I knew that’s what I would get. And we get the three POVs from those involved.

Inside the meat of the story I thought there were a ton of real emotions. I thought all of it was very believable. I felt for all three involved. However, I must admit the girlfriend irked me at times because she had zero empathy for the wife who had nothing. I thought she was quite selfish and didn’t put herself in the wife’s shoes. I get the jealousy. But the selfishness made me not root for her as much. And poor Darin. He’s caught between a rock and a hard place.

So why not five stars? I think believable on the front and back ends of the stories took away from my enjoyment somewhat.

The author claimed the wife had a miracle. And I accepted that. However, after seven years in a coma, I don’t think anyone would get up and walk out of a hospital in a week. The other is the end. While plausible, I thought it was born more out of shock value. And again, while it could happen; I think you would more likely get stuck by lightning first. I won’t say more for spoilers.

Overall, an interesting concept and a short read. You can give it a try and tell me what you think.

My book boyfriend Darin.

Tight by Alessandra Torre

Tight by Alessandra Torre

This is an adult romantic suspense with a dash of erotica (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥1/2
(Three and a half Tight Hearts)

Book Summary

I was happy in my small town. In my life as a single, thirty-two-year-old woman. I had a good job, wonderful friends, my independence.

I also hadn't got laid in three years. Hadn't been on a date in two. Had stopped counting calories and wearing makeup... a while ago.

Then Brett Jacobs waltzed in. Caressed my thigh, dug rough fingers into my hair, lowered his soft mouth to my skin, took sexual control of my mind and stirred it all around with what he packed in his pants. He flipped my quiet life upside down and crawled into a place in my heart I thought was dead.

The issue is his secret.
The issue is her.
The issue is that I don't even know she exists, and he thinks she's dead.
The issue is that shit is about to hit the fan and I can't hold on to him tight enough.

My Review

This is my second book by this author. The first was Sex, Love and Repeat which was pretty good. I’d heard mixed reviews about other books by this author and held off. I was recommended this one because of the twist and finally gave it a shot.

When I dived in, I immediately noticed how good the writing was. The words flowed with metaphors and adjectives that made sense. I was entranced.

Then, the super duper long sex chapter happened. Let me say, I can appreciate that the author didn’t wait until the 50% mark to have the sex happen, but it went on forever. And I love a good sex scene, but even I got bored.

One thing I loved about this story was that the author didn’t romanticize the subject matter. So many books have these days and it’s a serious subject that’s not at all hearts and flowers. To take a stance to put the subject back into perspective was a great thing.

However, with that said, I picked up the twist from the very first chapter it was “mentioned” and I use that term loosely because I don’t want to give spoilers. And it was because I assumed it couldn’t be that predictable, did I backtrack and make other guesses. For that reason, it was a real let down when the reveal happened.

So while it was a well-written book and a solid plot, I can’t give it five stars. I might have given it four except the one major sex scene felt like it went on for days and the others if there were any, didn’t add any value. I have to take off for that.

And I'd also like to mention the Title of the book. It didn't really make sense to the plot. I got the clever way the author used it as subtitles to chapters. But honestly, she overused the word in each chapter that didn't really further the plot of the story or the cleverness. I did a lot of eye-rolling ever time the word was used after a few chapters. I think it might have been better used in a different story where the word made sense.

SPOILERS

I also thought the age of the victim at the end of the book seemed old for the type of crime. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it made it harder to believe. (32, smh).

END OF SPOILERS

Audio Review
Angelo Di Loreto and Piper Goodeve did a good job with the narration. Because however, I bought the e-book and audio, I read the second half, impatient to find out what happened. And I can read faster than I can listen.

Overall, it’s a good read, I would recommend.

My book boyfriend Brett. (there was very little physical description of him like hair color, etc.)

Blindsight (Blindsight #1) by Adriane Leigh

Blindsight (Blindsight #1) by Adriane Leigh

This is an adult contemporary erotic novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥♥
(Five Hunter Hearts)

Book Summary

{blind·sight: the ability to see without knowing it}

Sometimes a single touch is all it takes to spark a wildfire.

Erin Warner learned that the day she bumped into the dashing, tattooed stranger on a busy Chicago street corner. She’s captivated from the moment his mystifying green eyes find hers, and it isn’t long before she finds herself flying to exotic locales to assist him, the award-winning erotic photographer Hunter Ellis, on location. What she didn’t bargain for was the way he makes her blood bubble and churn with lust and thinly-veiled promises of unfathomable erotic pleasure with every click of his camera.

But there is more to Hunter than meets the eye, including the intricately etched tattoos decorating his body that disguise horrific scars from a past, he refuses to revisit. As she peels away the layers, Erin realizes that what she thought was true, never really was at all, for both of them.
Now she can only hope that blind adoration for the dashing stranger didn’t sign her death warrant.

The first in a thrilling new erotic serial intended for mature audiences.

My Review

This story starts with a question that draws you into the story. Although this is a sexy book, there is a suspense element to it, which I love.

From the beginning, I’m guessing and I’m never quite sure. Along the way, Hunter grabs me with his sexy self. He’s gorgeous, mysterious and knows how to satisfy a woman. And well, that’s enough to keep me flipping pages when I should have been doing something else.

This is a serial, but the next installment will be out soon. So there is no need to wait. I’m looking forward to finding out what happens next because that ending was a shocker that left my jaw dropping.

My book boyfriend Hunter.

When he learns who Autumn’s husband really is, Gabe knows he will stop at nothing to protect her. Or is it too late for him to save his angel?

My Review

The story grips you from the beginning as you are transported in time to where things began for both of the love interest. Immediately, you care and want to know more. In fact, the beginning of the story is gut wrenching. I didn’t read the blurb, so I thought… (well, I don’t want to spoil it for you).

Two people have a chance meeting and a chance for love. It’s not your typical second chance love story. And most importantly it’s not a typical predictable story. There were twists I didn’t see coming.

Overall, I was really impressed with this author. This was my first read by her. I found the story entertaining and sexy as all hell. If you are looking for a solid read, pick this one up.

My book boyfriend is Gabe.
