Brush Strokes by Janelle Stalder

Brush Strokes by Janelle Stalder

This is a YA/NA contemporary romance (Rated R)

 ♥♥♥♥♥
 (Five Painted Hearts)

Book Summary

Art student, Olivia Banks, was living her dream at an exclusive school when everything came crashing down around her. Now back in the small town she grew up in, she's forced to spend her senior year at her old school where she's known as the 'freak', all because she'd rather focus on her painting than the trivial drama of high school. But things aren't the same as they were when she left. And the one thing that is turning her life upside down the most just happens to be the resident bad boy, Colt Morgan. Her senior year was supposed to fly by so she could pack up and leave again, but what happens when there's suddenly a reason to want to stay?

*This book contains strong language and some sexual content. For mature audiences.

My Review

Janelle Stalder is one of my all time favorite authors. Very few author’s I’ve enjoyed everything they’ve written. Hell, my old favorite Richelle Mead has let me down. But not so with this author.
This time she’s taken a dive into the contemporary market. And I wasn’t disappointed. This book is considered New Adult, but beware, it’s set in their senior year of high school with gives it a somewhat of a YA feel. I think it’s the maturity level that pushes the limit to New Adult and that the main characters are of age.
There is a lovely push pull drama of the story. There are highs and lows in the character’s lives. There are secrets and answers and some yet unknown. Although this story is a standalone, I have my fingers crossed for future books with some of the side characters. And I have it on good authority it will happen.
I can’t say much more without giving too much away. I’ll just say that even though Olivia’s the artist in this story, it’s Colt who paints stars in her eyes and love across her heart.
My book boyfriend is Colt and his sexy lip ring. YUM

Grace Street (Chapter 8 #1) by Ella Dominguez

Grace Street (Chapter 8 #1) by Ella Dominguez

This is an adult contemporary erotic novel (Rated NC-17)

 ♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a half Twisted Hearts)

Book Summary

Warning: This is neither a conventional romance nor a traditional love story. There are no hearts and flowers on the pages of this book. The heroine doesn't always make wise choices and though I've tried to make her strong, she's often times weak in the face of the fierce hero. The hero is not a knight in a shining armor. He's broken and frequently cruel, and what every woman in the real world should avoid. What's contained in this book isn't real - it's fiction; dark, depraved and decadent make-believe. Contains detailed sexual encounters, uncomfortable situations and erotic elements including voyeurism, oral and anal. Intended for readers 18+. If you're down with that, then by all means... read on.

Obsession, possession, resilience, insanity...

Seeking solitude and reprieve from her past failed relationships, Elsa begins her life anew in Richmond, hoping to find the change that she so desperately needs. Things are looking up for her, a new job, new friends... a fresh start.

But Victor has different plans for her. From the moment he heard her voice and set his eyes on Elsa, she became next on his to-do list; his Chapter 8. A well-known and respected criminal profiler, his mind is as dark as the people he hunts down. It takes one to know one, after all. Under the guise of making his subjects stronger, he intends to break Elsa down using everything in his arsenal, including pleasure, pain, humiliation, and things unspeakable. Everyone is fair game in his book and he discriminates against no one when he chooses his test subjects.

Lonely, still on the mend from a bad break-up and longing for sexual attention, Elsa consents to an odd proposition, unaware of Victor's plans. However, she can't be broken so easily and what he puts her through only fuels the fire burning within her, a flame that begins to blaze out of control as she becomes obsessed with everything about Victor and peeling back his cruel layers in search of the real man hiding beneath his heartless facade.

In Victor's world, there is no such thing as happily ever after and Chapter 8 proves to be an infuriating challenger when she flips the tables on his selfish and twisted game, a game they both may end up losing their hearts and minds over.

My Review

Talk about a twisted roller coaster of a romance if you can even call it that. I love unconventional books that take on a new look on a romance. More importantly, it has to be at least plausible. And quite frankly, I’m sure there is a Victor and an Elsa out there somewhere. People do the darnest things.
Okay, I digress. This story will make you want to slap Elsa and punch Victor. And maybe that’s the draw between these two. They’re both so f’ed up, they deserve each other. And the sex is HOT. It is hard not to stop turning the pages and reading more when you have crap to do, lol.
I have my theories and I’m sure I’m dead on. But still, this is an excellent read. If you like twisted romance stories, this book is for you.
My book boyfriend Victor.

This is an adult paranormal fantasy novel (Rated NC-17)

Book Summary

Few things in life can come between a grim reaper and her coffee, but the sexy, sultry son of Satan is one of them. Now that Reyes Farrow has asked for her hand, Charley Davidson feels it's time to learn more about his past, but Reyes is reluctant to open up. When the official FBI file of his childhood abduction lands in her lap, Charley decides to go behind her mysterious beau’s back and conduct her own investigation. Because what could go wrong?

Unfortunately, another case has fallen into her lap—one with dangerous implications. Some very insistent men want Charley to hunt down a witness who is scheduled to testify against their boss, a major player in the local crime syndicate. If Charley doesn't come up with an address in 48 hours, the people closest to her will start to disappear.

Add to that a desperate man in search of the soul he lost in a card game, a dogged mother determined to find the ghost of her son, and a beautiful, young Deaf boy haunted by his new ability to see the departed as clearly as he sees the living, and Charley has her hands full. The fact that Reyes has caught on to her latest venture only adds fuel to the inferno that he is. Good thing for Charley she's used to multi-tasking and always up for a challenge…especially when that challenge comes in the form of Reyes Farrow.

My Reviews

Okay, so I definitely enjoyed this book more than the last. There wasn’t much of a mystery in this one as again, Charlie was trying to save the world and almost…
I won’t have spoilers. Let’s just say I wondered how things would work out after a little mishap. There were like four plots happening all at the same time each had a similar theme to another. For instance, there was the I wasn’t as bad as I thought I was theme. There was one other theme, but I don’t want to spoil it.
We get answers in this one. Thank goodness for a character who almost told Charlie everything we’ve been dying to know. But then there are still unanswered questions and a major reveal at the end which I had already figured out.

Bonus, this book we get some really LOL moments. I mean I was cracking up for two different scenes nearly in tears. It's been a few books since I laughed like that. It was great.
I’ll tell you, the Charlie and Reyes dynamic almost pissed me off. There is only so much dancing around you can do. I got to the point where I wanted Reyes to move on because it would have served Charlie right. Anywho, I’ll still gobble up this series. I really like the characters. And damnit, I want more answers, lol.

Trail of Dead (Scarlett Bernard #2) by Melissa F. Olson

Trail of Dead (Scarlett Bernard #2) by Melissa F. Olson

This is an adult Urban Fantasy (Rated R)

 ♥♥♥♥
 (Four Pissed Hearts)

Book Summary

As a null, Scarlett Bernard possesses a rare ability to counteract the supernatural by instantly neutralizing spells and magical forces. For years she has used her gift to scrub crime scenes of any magical traces, helping the powerful paranormal communities of Los Angeles stay hidden. But after LAPD detective Jesse Cruz discovered Scarlett’s secret, he made a bargain with her: solve a particularly grisly murder case, and he would stay silent about the city’s unearthly underworld.

Now two dead witches are found a few days before Christmas, and Scarlett is once again strong-armed into assisting the investigation. She soon finds a connection between the murders and her own former mentor, Olivia, a null who mysteriously turned into a vampire and who harbors her own sinister agenda. Now Scarlett must revisit her painful past to find Olivia—unless the blood-drenched present claims her life first.

My Review

With most paranormal or urban fantasy, somehow the danger directed at the main character somehow puts everyone she cares about at risk and this is what happens here.
Mild spoiler. I really didn’t like how Scarlett treated Eli and didn’t warn him at all about the impending danger. She warns everybody but him just sending him away without warning. Ugh. I was so pissed.
I’m not on the Jesse bandwagon and I’m not sure if I’ll continue with this series if they end up together. And it’s not that Eli liked her and she doesn’t like him. They’re freaking sleeping together for a long time, one night stands, but there is chemistry there.
Jesse doesn’t really appreciate who she is and isn’t interested in the supernatural world other than how it helps his job.
Enough of that. It was still a good book I didn’t regret reading.

Amy McFadden did a good job with narration.

Dead Spots (Scarlett Bernard #1) by Melissa F. Olson

Dead Spots (Scarlett Bernard #1) by Melissa F. Olson

This is an adult Urban Fantasy novel (Rated R)

 ♥♥♥♥
 (Four Null Hearts)

Book Summary

Scarlett Bernard knows about personal space: step within ten feet of her, and any supernatural spells or demonic forces are instantly defused—vampires and werewolves become human again, and witches can’t get out so much as a “hocus pocus.” This special skill makes her a null and very valuable to Los Angeles’s three most powerful magical communities, who utilize her ability to scrub crime scenes clean of all traces of the paranormal to keep humanity, and the LAPD, in the dark.

But one night Scarlett’s late arrival to a grisly murder scene reveals her agenda and ends with LAPD’s Jesse Cruz tracking her down to strike a deal: he’ll keep quiet about the undead underworld if she helps solve the case. Their pact doesn’t sit well with Dash, the city’s chief bloodsucker, who fears his whole vampire empire is at stake. And when clues start to point to Scarlett, it’ll take more than her unique powers to catch the real killer and clear her name.

My Review

I love crime/mystery fiction. Mix that with a little paranormal and I’m all over it. This has the usual cast of characters vamps and weres, however they had a somewhat different world building. But also that’s not what the main character is. She’s a null. She cancels out the supernatural making them human in her presence. That makes her a popular girl and dangerous at the same time.
This story is interesting and frankly, I thought I had it figured out who done it and didn't. That’s always a plus in my book. This story didn’t have much by way of romance but more like hints of it. It’s certainly more of a Urban Fantasy than Paranormal Romance. However, I wasn’t at all annoyed by the lack of romance because the author doesn’t create one then only to back away from it.
I look forward to more in this series and recommend.

Book Summary

One-night stands are supposed to be with someone convenient, or wickedly persuasive, or regrettable. They aren’t supposed to be with someone like him.

But after a crazy Vegas weekend celebrating her college graduation—and terrified of the future path she knows is a cop-out—Mia Holland makes the wildest decision of her life: follow Ansel Guillaume—her sweet, filthy fling—to France for the summer and just…play.

When feelings begin to develop behind the provocative roles they take on, and their temporary masquerade adventures begin to feel real, Mia will have to decide if she belongs in the life she left because it was all wrong, or in the strange new one that seems worlds away.

My Review

The only disappointing thing about this book was it took so long for me to get into it. The first 30% was hair pulling. I wanted a straitjacket for some of the times we were in Mia’s head. Yikes.
And honestly, I thought of the book Lick when I started reading. While I don’t think author’s corner the market with certain situations in their book, sometimes, the parallels are too glaring. This was one of those times. While I thought Lick did a better job at the set up for waking up married in Vegas, I thought this book did a far better job of developing the relationship. Which is why I gave this book a high overall rating.
Characters. This author took the approach of really making us dive into the Mia’s head. While most of the time I like that, I thought we were in her head too much during the first part of the book. I think more time could have been spent with her having conversations with her friends, then us listening (reading) the thoughts directly out of her head. But thank the heavens, we did get there. She does fall back in her head a few times later, but I’d already started to really enjoy the story at that time.
Ansel. I really liked him a lot. More so that he was basically a nice guy with enough Alpha in him for him not to be weak. I loved he wasn’t a jerk and didn’t wear smug expressions to get the girl, lol. I didn’t think he was all that filthy. But maybe that’s my jaded view of the world. Lol
Overall, I liked it and look forward to the other two couples in the story. I’m not interested in reading about Perry.

Shanyna Thibodeaux did a really good job with the French accent. I’m assuming maybe there is French in her family with her name and all, lol.

My Review

This romantic suspense novel was just that. It fit the bill with romance and with some mystery. It was one easy to figure out but the author did a good job at making me second guess myself.
I liked the characters and thought they were well developed. I really liked some of the secondary character a whole lot as well.
This series doesn’t follow one couple but moves on with some of the secondary characters which is good and bad. I would really like Lacey and Jack and would have liked to see their relationship progress. However, I’m curious about some of the other characters and will move on in the series at some point.

Carnal Secrets (The Phoenix Pack #3) by Suzanne Wright

This is an adult paranormal romance novel (Rated NC-17)

 ♥♥♥♥
(Four Solid Hearts)

Book Summary

A pack Alpha and his estranged, true mate wrestle with painful secrets, ruthless enemies, and their own irresistible attraction, in the sexy third book of the Phoenix Pack series.

Half-shifter Shaya Critchley may hold a submissive role in her pack, but she’s done taking orders. After her Alpha wolf mate refused to claim her—but committed to interfering in her life—she took off. Now she hides from him, posing as a human in a town full of anti-shifter extremist groups. She thinks he’ll never find her again, and that suits her just fine. But she’s wrong.

Nick Axton can barely control his feelings for Shaya, but he could never claim her—not if he truly cares for her. The degenerative brain condition he keeps secret would ultimately leave her with a burden rather than a mate. But when Shaya runs away, Nick can’t bear the thought of never seeing her again. After tracking her down, he discovers Shaya’s feisty and passionate side in the process…a side he’d never seen before.

Under the menacing gazes of territorial local packs and violent human extremists, Nick vows to finally claim the spirited Shaya…and despite her initial resistance, Shaya just might find his fiery determination to be the ultimate aphrodisiac.

My Review

I liked that this book showed some difference from the last two. Shaya didn’t give Nick as easy way which can annoy and also make me want to applause. I hadn’t like how he treated her and he redeems himself in this book.
I didn’t like this as much as the first book in the series and liked it a lot better than the second.
A lot happens in this book and this romance takes time thus not a lot of sex scenes but things do get steamy. I really like Nick a lot and a lot better than Dante.
I look forward to more from this series and hope that we get a little more originality in the relationships.
My book boyfriend Nick.

My Review

Please note that this book is a threesome. While mostly m/f/m, there is a bit of m/m and m/m/f. YAY!

Anywho, if you like that kind of thing, this was a hot sexy quick read that can whet your appetite. It was well developed in the beginning and plausible. However, the ending felt a bit rushed and ended with insta love. Disappointment there. Still I enjoyed and not regret reading.

The characters were flushed out and I really enjoyed Thorn’s reluctance to take the next step with Cam. I also enjoyed that the female lead was typical weak, needy, virginal type.

Solid all around. I'm rating it four stars for what it is... a novella.

My Review

While I loved the first book, I might have loved the second installment simply because this felt like a repeat of the previous books with different character names.
The whole snarky comments, fight with Trey’s grandmother, pop culture pet names, felt like Taryn was reincarnated into Jamie.
Then Dante, beta wolf, was like alpha wolf in this story. And I missed Trey desperately.
That said, I still enjoyed the story. It was just a disappointment it wasn’t as original as the first.
Do I still recommend, sure? Just be prepared.

When female wolf shifter Taryn Warner first encounters Trey Coleman, an alpha male wolf shifter with a dangerous reputation, she’s determined to resist his charms. After all, Trey—who was only fourteen when he defeated his own father in a duel, winning the right to be alpha of his pack—can’t have anything to offer the talented healer besides trouble, or so she thinks.

Taryn finds herself drawn in by Trey’s forceful demeanor and arctic-blue eyes, and she eventually agrees to enter an uneasy alliance with him. If the two succeed in convincing their respective packs that they’ve chosen each other as mates, Trey will win valuable political allies, while Taryn will escape an odious arranged mating.

But there are a lot of potential pitfalls to this plan—including the very real possibility that the wolf shifters, overwhelmed by their growing attraction to each other, will be unable to maintain the clear heads needed to pull off the deception.

Oh my goodness. I don’t think I’ve been blow away by a story like this in a while. For me this was a winner. I couldn’t think of one bad thing to say about it. Everything about the story made since and was plausible. The romance happened at a realistic pace.
And talk about HOT! Trey was one of the best book boyfriends I’ve had in a long time. He was everything an aphla male should be and more. OMG!
This book had me staying up to read (listen). I couldn’t stop. I think I’m addicted.
All I can say is that the story had everything a PRN should have, hot romance, action and great story line. If you love paranormal romance, I’m highly suggesting this one.

My Review

I’m just going to say it. There are so many books out there; it’s hard sometimes to find the good ones. There are a lot of stories with potential that don’t deliver. Sorry. And it’s not indie vs. traditionally because I’ve blasted traditionally published authors (not indie turned) as well.
However, I marvel at the difference when an author takes the time to research a story and make sure all the I’s are dotted and t’s crossed instead of putting out crap and having blogger’s market them to their friends or whatever. And then get a ton of excellent ratings.
This story is well thought out from beginning to end. I could find no plot holes or maybe I was so swept away by the story I missed it. That isn’t often though. And if so, well, the point is they did such a wonderful job of covering it up, I missed it.
Anyway, pick this one up. It’s available in one book in paperback or ebook and three parts in audio.

My Review

Oh my hot alpha male. Okay, this story has all the elements for angst without the annoying factor. Really, never was I screaming where is the sex. I was just caught up in the story and the moments wondering what would happen next.

I will say I was shocked by one turn of event with her father. While I saw what was up with Phillip, I never….

Anyway, the explosion of when things come to a head, lol, was well worth the wait. And boy I’m super excited I didn’t have to wait for the next part.

Please be reminded, if you are reading, then you will get all three parts in one book. Only audio is still in three parts.

PLEASE NOTE - To all you authors out there - This seasoned traditionally published author had one of the main characters admitting that they were "Falling in Love" after several weeks. No insta love here. AWESOME.

First let me say how stupid I was to wait to read. I was so familiar with her adult paranormal side and her young adult dystopian with a paranormal twist side, I wasn’t sure about this. How hard can it be to do straight romance if you can do paranormal and dystopian ones? In this case, not hard at all.
There is a hot alpha male who harbors demons in the metaphor sense. He’s got a ton of issues and is trying to protect a girl from a future she’s colliding with because of her own curiosity.
I wasn’t sure what to expect but I’m damn happy I finally read (listened). I'm also glad all part were available as this ended on a minor cliffy.
If you don’t do audio, this book is available as one with all three parts put together. If you listen, you’ll have to get each part individually.
