Top 12 of 2012 Books I've read this past year

I've read over 250 books this year. To narrow my favorites down to 12 is extremely hard. So, I'm sure this list varies somewhat with my mood, I have to go with my gut today.  The books that left me thinking for days after.  Those for whom, thinking back to them gives me pause.  These are not in order because, well, it's too hard.  I love them all for different reasons.

First I'll go with

You see technically, I read Fifty Shades of Grey back in November although I didn't do a blog post until January. And if I were honest, Fifty Shades Freed wasn't as good as the other two. But whose counting. It is my all time favorite series.

Next up..

And technically, I read this book late December 2011, but let's face it, it's late December 2012 and I will probably read a few more books before this year is done that may have made this list.  Anyway, this book made me cry like a baby. Beautifully told and hot and sexy too.

Next...

Another wonderfully written story. One that tugs at the heart strings, and keeps you up reading all night. I was so moved by this story, it's just hard to put into words even after all this time after reading it.

Another..

What can I say about this book? I just Flat Out Loved it. Probably the best written book I read in 2012. Oh how I love Flat Finn.

Next...

This book makes me want to cry just thinking about it. No, you won't cry throughout the book or anything.  But there is a moment that will bring you to your knees. Wow, just a wow story.

Next...

This series (Captive in the Dark and Seduced in the Dark by C.J. Roberts) as a whole is disturbing yet so incredibly good. Sometimes, it just those books that take you to places you never want to go now or again that make the most impression.

Next up....

This series too, Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens was a really good series. In fact, I wasn't in love with the female lead in the first book. I really didn't like her much.  But I don't have to love the main characters to love the book. But by Effortless, I did like her and Kellen much more.

Next up...

Yes, this is the original cover of Beautiful Disaster as I read it when it was indie.  I prefer this cover actually. It's eye catching. As the story is swoon worthy.  Really good one.

Another one..

This series is imaginative and so well written. The narration of it in audio is really well done as well. I can't wait to move onto Heartless which is book 4, I think....

Next...

Talk about witty, sexy, well written and overall entertaining, this series has it all and then some. And Reyes, yeah, heavy sigh and a side of yummy, yum yum.

And...

I have to hand it to Karen Marie Moning, she did the impossible with this book. I was pleased and more pleased by it. I might be able to do a re-read and I'm not a re-reader. Once I've finished, I'm done.  I can hardly wait for the next book.

Finally....

I love this series to death. I can't say enough good things about it. I've read Eden South and just wow, wow.

Now it was incredibly hard again to make this list because there were just so many good books.  Ones that didn't make the list but were equally as good are....

Moon Dwellers (series) by David Estes
Dark Waltz by A.M. Hargrove
Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare
Gabriel's Rapture by Sylvain Reynard
Edge of Disaster by A.M. Hargrove
A Demon Made Me Do It (series) by Penelope King
On Dublin Street by Samatha Young
Easy by Tammara Webber
Joe by H.D. Gordon
Blood Warrior (series) by H.D. Gordon
Crux by Julie Reece
Shine (series) by Jeri Smith-Ready
Obsidian (series) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Crimson Midnight (series) by Amos Cassidy
Ink by Holly Hood
Rapture by Phillip W. Simpson
Gabriel's Rapture by Sylvain Reynard
Meeting Destiny by Nancy Straight
By a Thread (series) by Jennifer Estep
Still Missing by Chevy Stevens
Pleasures of Winter by Evie Hunter
Anything He Wants by Sara Fawkes
Taking Chances by Molly McAdams
Naked & All In by Raine Miller
Vincent Boys by Abbie Glines
Scarlet Dagger (series) by Krystle Jones
Howl (series) by Annalise Grey
The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson

And I'm sure I've forgotten someone, and I'm sorry if I have. There are just so many good books.

Anything He Wants (Dominated by the Billionaire #1-5) by Sara Fawkes

Anything He Wants (Dominated by the Billionaire #1-5) by Sara Fawkes

This is an adult erotica novel. (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥
(Four Fucking Hot Hearts)

Book Summary

First published as a five-part e serial novel, Anything He Wants inflamed imaginations everywhere and became a national bestseller. Now available for the first time ever as a complete book, this edition contains never-before-released scenes and special bonus material. Don’t miss this erotic tale of a powerful billionaire who always gets what he wants and the young woman who’s about to enter his exclusive realm--a world of glittering opulence and all-consuming passion, where she’ll explore the darkest reaches of her own desire.

Lucy Delacourt's temp position isn't quite her dream job but it pays the bills. The highlight of her day is riding the elevator in the mornings with a handsome stranger. Tall, dark, and sexy as hell, Lucy knows he's way out of her league, but a girl can look, right?

Everything changes the day the stranger seduces her. Completely out of character, she yields without a fight, but she has no idea her wanton acts with a man whose name she doesn't know will change her life forever. Because the sexy stranger is none other than Jeremiah Hamilton, billionaire CEO of Hamilton Industries, and one taste isn't nearly enough to satisfy his need. As the billionaire pulls Lucy deeper into his world of high stakes business deals and ruthless takeovers, he demands nothing less than her complete surrender. But even as enemies seek deadly revenge against him, she’ll discover that her greatest threat is falling for her fiercely guarded boss…and yielding to her own darkest needs.

My Review

For all my Fifty lovers, this book is worth checking out. I think I may found a guy that might be better than Christian. Don’t get me wrong, this is no Fifty. There isn’t any romance at least none like Fifty. But the man is worth speaking about.
Jeremiah is far better than Gideon, better than Dominique and Jack. And maybe even Christian. Jeremiah is a cold son of bitch who gets what he wants when he wants and is sexy as hell you want to bend to his will.

I do admit, the begining straddles the line of believability. I struggle witht he character who acts experienced yet we are told she's more of a wallflower, but if no guys ask her out why does the smoking hot billionaire want her????
Oh my god, and the ending, the ending begs for a sequel. Don’t rate the book on the ending. It’s there to entice you to read the next book and it is genius if you ask me. Why four stars and not five?  Well, there was the unrealistic nature in the beginning of the book.
Let me tell you, this author doesn’t waste time getting to the good stuff and I have to give her points for that. However, the idea that a billionaire would conduct himself in that manor is a little unbelievable. Then again, look at our politicians who know they are under scrutiny. Still, for a book, it straddled the line of believability. But I give it to the author. It was hot as hell.
So I can’t wait for the sequel and I highly suggest you read it.  OMFG, is all I can continue to say. Well, that and the occasional scream of Jeremiah’s name.
 Audio Review
Clarissa Knightly did a good job with this book. The guys sounded like guys and girls sounded like girls. And the characters sounded different enough so that I had no trouble following along.
My book boyfriend, Jeremiah.

Two Graves (Helen #3) by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child

Two Graves (Helen #3) by Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child

This is an adult thriller series. (Rated R)

♥♥♥♥
(Four Heart Leaping Hearts)

Book Summary

For twelve years, he believed she died in an accident. Then, he was told she'd been murdered. Now, FBI Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast discovers that his beloved wife Helen is alive. But their reunion is cut short when Helen is brazenly abducted before his eyes. And Pendergast is forced to embark on a furious cross-country chase to rescue her.
But all this turns out to be mere prologue to a far larger plot: one that unleashes a chillingly-almost supernaturally-adept serial killer on New York City. And Helen has one more surprise in store for Pendergast: a piece of their shared past that makes him the one man most suited to hunting down the killer.
His pursuit of the murderer will take Pendergast deep into the trackless forests of South America, to a hidden place where the evil that has blighted both his and Helen's lives lies in wait . . . a place where he will learn all too well the truth of the ancient proverb:
Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.

My Review

Most people who know me or follow my reviews knows that crime/thriller/mystery/police procedurals were my first love in reading. Although I must admit to a secret love affair with the Sweet Valley High series when I was a kid. Anyway, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child were brought to my attention back when book stores still existed (a lot, lol). Which was only a few years ago.
My favorite authors Patricia Cornwell, John Grisham, Sue Graton, and Mary Higgins Clark, just didn’t put enough books out to keep me reading. Then Twilight happened and I devoured the books. Although, only the first one was really worth reading. Anywho, the salesperson at the book store suggested this duo and I haven’t looked back since.  Then again, I was introduced to Goodreads and now I can’t keep up with my reading.
So back to this book. Although this book says the third, this is really like the twelfth or so in the series. It was a good read. We got to see another side of Pendergast and it was touch and go for a hot second. There were places were the book could have moved faster but for the most part, I was thoroughly entertained.
And since I find myself reading more and more YA and romance and paranormal, sometimes it’s hard to get back into these books which only come once a year.  But I don’t regret reading.
The first book in this series is Relic which was made into a movie years ago. I can only hope they may make another.
Audio Review
Rene Auberjonis continues this series. He isn’t a bad narrator. In fact he’s quite good. But I prefer Scott Brick’s reading of this series. Anyway, Rene does an excellent job with the accents and keeping the characters different enough that I didn’t have any trouble following along.

My book boyfriend Tristram. (Not sure on the spelling since I listened to the book.)

Hidden (Firelight #3) by Sophie Jordan

Hidden (Firelight #3) by Sophie Jordan

This is a young adult paranormal romance novel (Rated PG-13)

Book Summary

Jacinda was supposed to bond with Cassian, the "prince" of their pride. But she resisted long before she fell in love with Will—a human and, worse, a hunter. When she ran away with Will, it ended in disaster, with Cassian's sister, Miram, captured. Weighed down by guilt, Jacinda knows she must rescue her to set things right. Yet to do so she will have to venture deep into the heart of enemy territory.

The only way Jacinda can reach Miram is by posing as a prisoner herself, though once she assumes that disguise, things quickly spiral out of her control. As she learns more about her captors, she realizes that even if Will and Cassian can carry out their part of the plan, there's no guarantee they'll all make it out alive. But what Jacinda never could have foreseen is that escaping would be only the beginning....

Loyalties are tested and sacrifices made in the explosive conclusion to Sophie Jordan's Firelight trilogy.

My Review

So, I wasn’t all gung ho about reading this book.  But to be honest, the story moved. There was enough going on to hold my attention.
But during the book, Jacinda is constantly reminding us who she has chosen and the author keeps making us feel bad over her decision. It was quite confusing, but I liked both guys. I’m usually all for love triangles. I think it makes things interesting and I usually pick a side or don’t care. In this case, I really liked both, but this book made me like one more. Oh, well. I felt like I did in the Matched series finale (Crossed), I just felt like there were no real winners.
Anyway, if you like the series, I say go finish it. It wasn’t a bad book or bad series finale. I’m just still really depressed over one character. I’m hoping she will write his story. He deserves a HEA.

Audio Review
Therese Plummer continues to narrator in this series. She does a good job with it.
My book boyfriend Cassian. (Is he the guy, you ask? I won’t say. Read it for yourself.)

My Review

What I didn’t love about this story or this series? That I don’t have the next book. My heartbreaks at the ending but I’m hoping for a hail mary miracle.  Anyway, down and dirty.
This book is about a girl with two halves literally.  Some people joke and say they are say a teacher by day and writer by night. Well this girl is human by day and demon by night. Excellent premise and young adult too. I will say in the first book we get a slight bit more of human girl.  I would say this book we get a slight bit more of demon girl.
Things aren’t good when this book starts and they only get worse.  I hail the author for making a bold move in this book that made me so happy. Now, I don’t like the ending or the prospect, but I won’t say more on that. All I can say was that it was an excellent ride. More Bones please.
You haven’t read this series you say? Are you a YA paranormal fan? Then you must read. Although this book has romance, it doesn’t lack on action with a quest. This series has it all. Strap in and get ready for a wild ride, this is so worth a read.
Overall, I highly recommend.
My book boyfriend BONES.

River's Recruit (Sanctuary #1) by Charlotte Abel

River's Recruit (Sanctuary #1) by Charlotte Abel

This is a "new adult" paranormal romance novel (Rated R)

 ♥♥♥♥1/2

Book Summary

Jonathan McKnight lost everything in Afghanistan. His left hand, his identical twin and his self-respect. He searches for redemption during a solo backpacking trip into the remote Sawatch Mountains of Colorado and discovers a secret tribe of shifters.

River, the beautiful young shifter that rescues Jonathan from certain death, wants to recruit him. He is equally determined to rescue her from her cult-like society — even if he has to kidnap her.

My Review

The things I loved about this story was richness of the setting. It was refreshing to be away from city life and in the wildness working against the elements.  The second thing I liked about this story was the world building. This is a shifter story, yet it’s not typical. There is history behind who these people are and what they believe. The author didn’t cut corners on bring to life this tale. And what I really loved about the story were the two flawed characters River and Jonathan.
River is the one in this story with a twisted past. She is the one with this hidden secrets that shaped who she was.  Typically, in most books I read it’s the guy.  But, let me not stray, Jonanthan has his own baggage and a wound that will never allow him to forget what he went through.
These two are fated not to be together more than Romeo and Juliet. Yet there is a love story that develops at the right pace. No insta love her, thank goodness.
Overall, it was a really good read for me and I highly recommend.
My book boyfriend, Jonathan.
