Lick (Stage Dive #1) by Kylie Scott

Lick (Stage Dive #1) by Kylie Scott

This is an adult contemporary romance novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥1/2
(Three and a half Rocking Hearts)

Book Summary

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favorite son is sure to be a wild ride.

My Review
Let me tell you, I wanted to love this book. The set up was interesting. Not totally new as it reminds me of a scene in the Hangover. But I certainly was interest in author’s take on it.
The technical aspect of the writing was good. No complaints there.
The overall plot of the story was your normal romance with ups and downs. And I enjoyed the by play between the couple. I’ll admit, I was in the story and listened all the way through.
Major problem though. It had the unforgivable. The one thing I can’t overlook. INSTA LOVE. I’m sorry. You’ll never convince me you can fall in love (not true love) in a day or two or three. You can begin falling in love, infatuation can occur, in lust, but not LOVE. And because it’s unbelievable, it’s hard to totally enjoy the story.
Add to the sometime predictable actions of the character where even I could finish their lines. An interruption that led to a “realization” that the actions from earlier really weren’t either of their desires (eye rolls). I hate interruptions (to sex), I’ll forgive one and I did. I only marked off one star for insta love.
But there were other plot holes like her brother having his own place yet he ended up living with someone else with no mention of what happened to his place. (I over simplified as to not give away spoilers. But those who’ve read will understand). There were a couple of others. I didn’t even take off for that.
Audio Review
Andi Arnt did a good job at narration.
Overall, it was a decent read. If you are okay with Insta Love, I think you might enjoy this one. Personally, I enjoyed Sinners on Tour and the Thoughtless series better if you want rock and roll.
My book boyfriend is MAL. But I’m going to give you David anyway.

 ♥♥♥♥♥
(Five F'ing Hot Hearts)

Book Summary

This is a Part One of a three part contemporary erotic romance novella series. Part two will be released on April 15.

If you like your romances light and sweet, this is NOT for you. If you DON'T like your romances tough, gritty, this is NOT for you. Just sayin...

Skylina...
Her story is not pretty. Discarded like trash by her father. Forced into prostitution by her mother. Used and abused, she learns to cope. And survives. Because she has to. What other choice is there?

Ryder...
His story is every bit as ugly. Beaten and left for dead. A star whose light was extinguished long before it should have been. Now a he’s drug addict, wrestling with the demons that try to destroy him.

Their paths should never have crossed. But they did. Will they be able to keep their dark and shameful secrets hidden from each other?

My Review

This installment is a nibble of excitement. If you liked the Castaway series, you are going to love this. The stories aren’t the same but the idea of a quick gratification of reading a quick book knowing the next installment is there when you have the time is awesome.
I love a story with a broken alpha male. This one is so different from anything I’ve read. He wasn’t abused and I won’t say more. But he has every reason to be in the state he’s in.
Then there is the female lead. She’s hasn’t had the life either. The two of them could make magic, but you’ll just have to read to see it play out.
I was swept away by the story and couldn’t put it down.
I think these books are dirt cheap at like 99 pennies each. No reason to hesitate and pick this one up. It’s worth it. Check it out.

My Reviews

Paranormal might not have been my first love in reading, however, a lot of times I think it might be my favorite. I love reading a story that isn’t reality. That’s what escaping into reading a book is all about. I want to be swept away into another world that I could only dream about existing.
This story takes me to college with an unassuming girl just living life. She’s thrust into a world that she didn’t know about. What I like most about Eve is that she doesn’t sit by. She demands answers and finds courage in what she learns.
While the story of boy and girl that have obstacles to overcome if they even attempt a relationship isn’t new, that’s not what drew me into the story. Romance is an undercurrent of everything. It’s the new world with “paranormal characters” I haven’t read about that had me hook.
Personally, I found myself so deep in the story, my ipad followed me everywhere I went so I could sneak a second to read a page or two just because I kept thinking about it. There is a MINOR cliffy at the end, nothing that will keep you up at night. So pick this one up. I also believe the next book should be releasing soon.
I had a tough time with choosing a guy. And no, there isn’t a love triangle. It’s hard to explain. You’ll just have to read. Gage might have been my first choice, in the end…
My book boyfriend is Asher.

My Review

No one lives a charmed life. Hell, tons of books are written about the rich and famous who aren’t happy in their current lives. Fiction, as we all knows, stems from bits of truths.
What this author brings to the table are stories about real people. Not the top one percent. We get the gritty lives of people who could be your next door neighbor. I really like that. I also love that the heroes of the stories are strong yet not invincible. They aren’t billionaires but they can certain take care of a woman financially, emotionally, and physically.
This particular story is at the core a story of abuse and how to overcome the shame of it. It isn’t the same scenario we’ve seen before either. Its got a twist that makes it that much more interesting.
If you like contemporary romance with a bit of grit, pick this one up.

Fury of the Demon  (Kara Gillian #6) by Diana Rowland

This is an adult paranormal fantasy novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥♥
(Five Fabulous Hearts)

Book Summary

Who can Kara Gillian trust?

That’s what she’d like to know. Demon summoner and now a consultant for the FBI, Kara Gillian has spent the past several months in the demon realm training while recovering from the treachery of the demonic lord Rhyzkahl. Yet though the torment and betrayal she suffered at his hands continues to plague her, she’s not about to let that slow her down.

Kara returns to Earth to search for a fellow summoner being held by allies of Rhyzkahl. Aiding in the hunt are Kara’s friends, FBI agents Ryan Kristoff and Zack Garner. However, Kara and Zack know Ryan’s true identity—though he himself does not—and questions of loyalty threaten to tear apart their previously close-knit group. Rhyzkahl’s machinations run deeper than they could have ever imagined, and the search for the missing summoner takes on a desperate edge while dangers from ancient demon oaths loom and enemies increase in power and numbers.

Armed with her skills, wit, and attitude, it is up to Kara to save her friends and her world.

The price of failure will be her soul.

My Review

Wow, what a book. First of all, can I say Rhyzkahl totally pisses me off. I wanted to love him but now he’s the guy I hate. Mzatal was the guy I didn’t want to like and now I think I’m totally in love. Then there is Ryan. I love him and I don’t trust his inner self.
SPOILERS
Then there are the lovable side characters. Oh god, if Paul doesn’t live another day I’ll be totally heart broken.
For those who’ve read, I’m thinking that Zach is Rhyzkahl’s dad. And there are no female demonic lords. So what’s going to happen with Zach’s new baby girl? And of course, that boy I forget his name the one that worked with Mzatal before he was captured is Kara’s cousin and Rhyzkahl’s kid.
END OF SPOILERS
Despite the rocky start with the man hating books, I’m glad I hang on. It’s an overall interesting series and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
There is just so much drama going on, I’m like heaven. I totally can’t wait for the next book. Will it be the last? I’m thinking if this isn’t a forever series, it’s going to end soon.
Anyway, check this one out if you like Urban Fantasy. That’s the closest genre I can come up with.

Touch of the Demon (Kara Gillian #5) by Diana Rowland

 (Four Demonic Lord Hearts)

Book Summary

Kara Gillian is in some seriously deep trouble.

She’s used to summoning supernatural creatures from the demon realm to our world, but now the tables have been turned and she’s the one who’s been summoned. Kara is the prisoner of yet another demonic lord, but she quickly discovers that she’s far more than a mere hostage. Yet waiting for rescue has never been her style, and Kara has no intention of being a pawn in someone else’s game.

There’s intrigue to spare as she digs into the origin of the demonic lords and discovers the machinations of humans and demons alike. Kara is shocked to discover that she has her own history in the demon realm, and that the ties between her and the demonic lords Rhyzkahl and Szerain go back farther than she could have ever imagined. But treachery runs rampant among all the lords, and she’s going to have to stay sharp in order to keep from being used to further their own agendas. The lords have a secret that dates back to earth’s ancient history, and it could have devastating repercussions for both worlds.

Yet more than anything else, Kara’s abilities as a homicide detective will be put to the test—because this time the murder she has to solve is her own.

My Review

The last book ended in a huge cliff hanger. So of course I moved onto this book which was available with swiftness. This story takes place primarily in an entirely new world. Thus there is a lot of world building. And no surprise, since Kara’s technically not on earth, there isn’t much cop work. So for all you cop/crime/police procedural fans, you may not like this book as much since there is more of a paranormal fantasy feel in this one.
However, there is much to discover that will probably piss a lot of fans off. I was one of those fans but as the story dragged on, I learned to accept it. In fact, I should have expected it considering her writing style. No man stays good in the eyes of this author and a few others I could name. Still, I find myself intrigued by the end game of this story. So I will push on.
I will also say that we get a number of answers but unfortunately a whole host of new questions. However, this author has mastered the balance of such in this one. You will want to continue on.

Twisted (Tangled #2) by Emma Chase

Twisted (Tangled #2) by Emma Chase

This is an adult contemporary romance novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥
(Three Dreadful Hearts)

Book Summary

There are two kinds of people in the world. The ones who look first, and the ones who leap. I’ve always been more of a looker. Cautious. A planner. That changed after I met Drew Evans. He was so persistent. So sure of himself – and of me.

But not all love stories end happily ever after. Did you think Drew and I were going to ride off into the sunset? Join the club. Now I have to make a choice, the most important of my life. Drew already made his –in fact, he tried to decide for the both of us. But you know that’s just not my style. So I came back to Greenville. Alone. Well, sort of alone....

What I've come to realize is that old habits die hard and sometimes you have to go back to where you began, before you can move ahead.

TWISTED picks up two years after Tangled’s end, and is told from Kate’s POV.

My Review

I was pretty excited about this book despite the reviews. I assumed maybe people didn’t like that Kate narrated the story over Drew. So very wrong, I should have listened. I want my $12 I spent on the audio book back along with the “7” hours I spent listening.
Here’s the problem. The ‘technical’ aspect of the writing is good. There were some humorous and tender spots to the story. But I should mention the author did fall back to old comedy lines that have been overused. But that’s neither here nor there.
The real problem is that the whole story hinged on misunderstanding. If any of the characters would have used either the word cheating or pregnant, there wouldn’t have been a story. And I’m not talking about just Kate and Drew. It includes almost everyone who shows their face in the story after the whole “misunderstanding” took place.
Anywho. SPOILERS
Let’s talk. Let’s talk about the predictability of the story that just ruined it for me. I’m bringing out the bullet points, so you know things are bad.
·         First, Kate goes to see her “doctor” friend named Bobby, Bob, Roberta (that’s the order in which the names are revealed to us in the story). Immediately, I know Drew’s going to get the wrong idea.
·         And guess what, Kate makes an appointment to confirm pregnancy with her friend for the very same day. So why does Kate write that EVENING’s apt (& o’clock Bob) on her work calendar. Can I say there are several problems with this? Kate’s smart at least that’s what the author tells us. Why does she need a reminder about a same day appointment to confirm pregnancy? It’s something like that you don’t forget. The second problem, who in this day in age keeps a handwritten calendar? Really, most tech savvy folks and I imagine Kate and Drew are, would put appointments on their e-mail calendar or on their smart phone. There are so many ways the author could have accomplished this in a believable fashion.
·         Then Kate goes to the apt. She parks in a garage. Drew sees her. She doesn’t know. She’s hugging a guy and he makes the leap that she’s cheating. I’ll get to that in a moment. After the apt., she doesn’t go straight home, she walks around. “But she’s so excited to tell him???” Anyway, poor reason to have him believe she’s out with another guy for a long period of time.
·         About that same topic before I move on, when he says he knows. Why didn’t she ask him he knows what? It an obvious question. No, she assumes he saw her in a garage and knew she went to an OB/GYN apt. Really?
·         Okay Drew. I’m sorry. But he only sees her hugging a guy and instead of asking her if she’s cheating, he hires a stripper and puts on a show for Kate. It’s unforgivable. I don’t care how much in love she is. He didn’t have enough evidence to take that leap.
·         And why does DeDe call her husband asking what’s up with Drew and he doesn’t say ‘I agree with Drew because I can’t believe Kate cheated???’ Or why doesn’t Dolores say ‘how can Drew want Kate to abort the kid???’ No, this is what rational people would say. But if they did, this whole story wouldn’t work.
·         If any of these characters, Kate, Drew, Dolores, Matt, Kate’s mom, Her mom’s boyfriend, etc used the word cheating or pregnant, this story would have fallen apart.
Everything hinged on MISUNDERSTANDING. And anybody who knows me, know I hate that shit. I blasted J.R. Wars BDB series for that.
I could go on, but I’m tired and it’s not worth it. Let’s just say, I wish the author would have had Drew find out sooner he was stupid and spent the rest of the time on how he made it up to her. How they handled living apart. I wasn’t amused or entertained when intelligent characters acted dense. It was annoying as all hell that even when they came face to face they didn’t use the word cheating or pregnant until well into the conversation to the point it was almost over. Then, Kate doesn’t explain to her family why Drew was acting like an ass. Instead, she leaves him to hang out to dry and say she loves him and everyone should just accept him. Really. These characters don’t have any communication skills.
And for these reasons and others, I’m being generous by giving it three hearts. I’m rounding up because it’s still better than some other  stories.
Audio Review
Charlotte Penfield does a good job at narration except it moves too slow. It’s almost as if the producers wanted to stretch a 5.5 hour book into 7 hours. Uncommon for me, I listed to this audio book at  1.5x speed.

My Review

I’ve been intrigued with this series since the beginning. And I have been able to peg the killer or bad guy in the last couple of books. This time, not so much. I guessed late in the story but up until that point nada. I guess it came so out of left field.
Anyway, slow progress continues on the romance front. We learn more about Ryan and Little about our sexy demon. I won’t say more.
The biggest thing is the cliffy at the end. I might have called foul if the next book weren’t available.
Still a series I suggest. It only gets better as we go. There is a steady building of the overall arc/plot of the series. I’m enjoying watching that unfold the most.

Book Summary

J.R. Ward's # 1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood continues as a royal bloodline is compromised by a grave threat to the throne.

Long live the King…

After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle--with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything--and everyone--at risk.

Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response--or the distance it creates between them.

The question is, will true love win out... or tortured legacy take over?

My Review

Okay, I’ll say if no one else will. And maybe this is just me. I’ve struggled a bit with this author’s overuse of misunderstanding in stories as a means of conflict. It’s why I didn’t much like Rhage’s or Zsadist’s stories very much. This time she handles it in a way that wasn’t noticeable or annoying.
Vishous is my absolute favorite but I thought his story was the worst. I wasn’t a fan of how the whole Jane thing played out. Still Wrath has been my number two until I met Qhuinn. They are tied now, but I was happy to once again embark on his story with Beth. This is the third time. And again, this author shows that love doesn’t equal a happily ever after (HEA).
But more importantly, this author broke all her rules. Before she’s stated that no one but the main couple of any book would have sex. So broken in this story. I won’t name names, but just to say, she broke what she declared to pieces.
I wish we would have gotten more Qhuinn and Blay, but you can’t have it all. She’s left us hooks for at least three or four future story lines and I’m not sure I can wait another year. God, at least when we wait a year we get a nice long, well thought out plot that makes us want more.
And, if you haven’t read this series, oh, you are missing out. Even the books that weren’t my favs were far better than most paranormal/urban fantasy books out there. Well worth the read, well worth the wait.
Audio Review
I’ll be honest. Jim Frangione doesn’t modulate his voice vary much for each different character. Yet somehow, I’m never confused about who’s speaking. Thus, he has talent.
My book boyfriend THE KING, Wrath.

Dirty Nights by Emerson St.Clair ~ Blitz

Book Blurb...

Emerson St. Clair ... A Little Dark, A Little Erotic, A Lot Sexy
I am a lover of all things fiction, particularly dark erotic romance. I find all forms of art to be quite intriguing, but dance and music have always been an inspiration to my writing. I believe there is a hidden talent within each of us, but it takes courage to uncover and explore that talent, whatever it may be. Failure only happens when one stops trying.
