Burned by Karen Marie Moning

Burned by Karen Marie Moning

An adult paranormal romance novel (rated NC-17)

 ♥♥♥♥1/2 Hearts
(Four and a Half Jerrico Barron Hearts)

Book Summary

It’s easy to walk away from lies. Power is another thing.

MacKayla Lane would do anything to save the home she loves. A gifted sidhe-seer, she’s already fought and defeated the deadly Sinsar Dubh—an ancient book of terrible evil—yet its hold on her has never been stronger.

When the wall that protected humans from the seductive, insatiable Fae was destroyed on Halloween, long-imprisoned immortals ravaged the planet. Now Dublin is a war zone with factions battling for control. As the city heats up and the ice left by the Hoar Frost King melts, tempers flare, passions run red-hot, and dangerous lines get crossed.

Seelie and Unseelie vie for power against nine ancient immortals who have governed Dublin for millennia; a rival band of sidhe-seers invades the city, determined to claim it for their own; Mac’s former protégé and best friend, Dani “Mega” O’Malley, is now her fierce enemy; and even more urgent, Highland druid Christian MacKeltar has been captured by the Crimson Hag and is being driven deeper into Unseelie madness with each passing day. The only one Mac can depend on is the powerful, dangerous immortal Jericho Barrons, but even their fiery bond is tested by betrayal.

It’s a world where staying alive is a constant struggle, the line between good and evil gets blurred, and every alliance comes at a price. In an epic battle against dark forces, Mac must decide who she can trust, and what her survival is ultimately worth.

My Review

OMG, OMG, OMG
So yes, I read the first chapter way back when KMM announced she was writing Burned from Mac's perspective because it was the best way possible to tell the story. (I really liked Iced with Dani) And was a bit disappointed the book took a totally different direction.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD
I love Dancer, and he was basically written out of the story with all the changes. In fact, he’s basically out of the love square that was going on. I won’t say more. But I’m bummed about that.  He was one of my favorite characters.
And although the book starts off on a bang, it fizzles a bit. I think it may have a lot to do with how much time has been in between when I read the last book. It took me a while to acclimate to the new narrator of the story.
Let me just say that KMM surprised me with Dani. I knew that she had to find a way around Dani’s age, I just didn’t see certain things coming. It's probably because so much was going on, I was just trying to keep up.
And Holy Heck, we get a lot of answers in this book, so don’t give up on the beginning. When things get going, they get going.
And if you read KMM’s Highlander series. DAEGUS and Drusten are in this book. LE SIGH. OMG. I love Daegus, he was my FAV. Everything is coming together and you will have so many surprises.
But there was one problem. Without giving too much away, there is this invisibility problem. Someone can’t see a scale when they step on it, yet they can read a book. Considering everything small goes invisible, how is that possibly??? PLOT HOLE. (*waves KMM, I’m happy to beta read for you, lol ;)
Overall, I’m freakin’ excited about the book. Oh, the cliffy. There isn’t a true cliffy. She doesn’t leave you hanging about what may happen. She tells you. You are just left wondering what will come in the next book. But in every series, you want the next book. So no true cliffy here.
My book boyfriend… Barrons (but I’ll take any of the men, Dancer, Lor, Ryoden etc)

Fallen TOO FAR series by Abbi Glines

This is a New Adult contemporary romance series
 ♥♥♥♥
(Four TOO FAR Hearts)
Book Blurb

She is his new stepfather’s daughter.

She is still naïve and innocent due to spending the last three years taking care of her sick mother.

But for twenty-four year old Rush Finlay, she is the only thing that has ever been off limits. His famous father’s guilt money, his mother’s desperation to win his love, and his charm are the three reasons he has never been told no.

She isn’t prepared for the lifestyle change and she knows she’ll never fit into this world. Then there is her sexy stepbrother who her father leaves her with for the summer while he runs off to Paris with his wife. Rush is as spoiled as he is gorgeous. He is also getting under her skin. She knows he is anything but good for her and that he’ll never be faithful to anyone. He is jaded and has secrets Blaire knows she may never uncover but even knowing all of that…

Blaire just may have fallen too far.
My Review
I can’t say this is the best written book I ever read, but it certainly was entertaining. I think her style is keep it simple and the formula works, so gold star for her. I fell for Abbi Glines with the Vincent Boys’ book. I wasn’t a huge fan of the Vincent Brothers book and it took me a while to move on and read another of her books.
I still think the Vincent’s Boys was a better book and maybe because I’m a fan of YA books and first love kind of thing. But Beau still gets to me.
With that said, I did see the magic Abbie creates with her down and out girl and the guy that helps her find her path with love along the way. She also has a way of creating minor characters that can become stars in their own right.
This series has all the drama but not. I don’t want to give a lot away, but there is drama all around this couple as opposite to drama within their relationship. Don’t get me wrong, they have their problems. But most of them are external and not internal. There is a HEA for those who need that. And one that is so sweet it boarders cheesy but not.
There are plot holes in each book that can easily be fixed with a sentence or two. I’m not sure who beta’d or edited, but I found glaring ones in each book.
I’ll give a quick example. Abby makes a point to the reader that this girl doesn’t have a cell phone. She has less than a two minute conversation with Rush before she’s allowed to stay. Poor girl doesn’t even no where the bathroom is in the morning. Yet, she goes and applies for jobs and SAYS, she’s waiting for a call back. How is she getting that call??? She doesn’t no where the bathroom is. She doesn’t know Rush’s phone number. She doesn’t have a cell. So yeah. PLOT HOLE.
Anywho, I still think this series is well worth a read.
My book boyfriend Rush.

My Review

Honestly, I knew going in this would be a depressing book. I’d seen the comments. But I think a strong warning from the Attorney General like on a pack of cigarettes in bold lettering should be on the front cover and should say…
WARNING- IF YOU SHOW SIGNS OF DEPRESSION OR HAVE ATTEMPTED SUCIDE IN THE PAST, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK.
Seriously, I considered slitting my wrist during and after reading this one. This book had to be about the most misery characters you ever met, who were equally miserable together.
And unfortunately, MS beautiful writing (not storyline, character development but…) but how she strung words together wasn’t enough to overcome the heavy weight of melancholy this story presented. Although to be honest, the Shiver series itself was pretty depressing but not as bad as this.
Cole, our rock star, and one of our favorite side characters from the Mercy Wolves series, has moved to LA to be with Isabelle.  While I wanted to root for their love and HEA, I couldn’t.
Isabelle was busy the entire book being a untrusting, hateful bitch, who was so engrossed with her own misery, I kindly wished she’d be put down. Slitting her wrist would have been a good thing. (Mind you, she is a book character and not a real person).
While Cole was climbing out of the rabbit hole, she was digging herself into one as an early grave. I couldn’t understand why Cole put up with her BS after a point. She never redeemed herself and never apologized for her lack of trust and he didn’t try to get her to see reason. Example. She smelled alcohol on him. Did she ever check his breath???
This was one time I hoped; no I prayed this couple would not end up together. She did nothing to prove herself worthy of him while he spent the entire book trying to prove he was worthy of her and came off as a weak pussy who had no balls and laid on the ground to be her doormat. And she didn’t deserve the honor. It almost felt like a fuck you by the author. Like she didn’t want to write the book but she was forced maybe by contract. So she did in a way to say fuck you.
Anywho, I think I need some therapy after reading that one. I can’t recommend it unless you are an insanely happy person all the time. Then maybe it may help you to see the darker side of life.
My book boyfriend Cole (barely.)

The Fallen Angel Series by J.R. Ward

The Fallen Angel series by J.R. Ward

This is an adult paranormal romance series (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥
(Four Fallen Hearts)

Blurb from Covet
(partial)

Seven deadly sins. Seven souls to save. This is the first battle between a savior who doesn't believe and a demon with nothing to lose!

Redemption isn't a word Jim Heron knows much about-his specialty is revenge, and to him, sin is all relative. But everything changes when he becomes a fallen angel and is charged with saving the souls of seven people from the seven deadly sins. And failure is not an option.

My Review

If you are expecting the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB), you won’t get it. Despite several books being set in Caldwell, and some of the characters from BDB making cameo appearances whether in name or in description, the vampire world or lessors don’t make any impact in this series at all.
In fact, except for the first book and one other, the vernacular (slang) isn’t much used. In the first book, the main guy of the book uses the slang somewhat. And in another book, JRW slips up and Jim talks and dresses somewhat like a brother for a hot second. But then, he’s back to his normal self.
Overall, because it was the Fallen Angel series, I expected Lassiter to make an appearance. Sadly he did not. Although we get a hint of his story. We also get teased to believe that these two series will collide with Lassiter at its center in another spin off or in the BDB series.
Other than that, the writing style of JRW was ever present. How she multilayers stories into one to keep you guessing and wanting more is apart of this series as well.
Personally, I wish we would have gotten more with Nigel and Colin. I love the m/m thing, plus they are angels which really speaks a lot to love is love no matter what.
My favorite book of all in the series is ENVY. I think this book kept me going onto the end. We get insight into Adrian and Eddie’s bromance and Nigel and Colin’s romance. And I’m a lover of all things m/m, so yeah. Too bad, we don’t get much more after that. Yes, there is a bit, but nothing like in this book.
I was disappointed in the ending of the series. Yes, there were a lot of satisfied conclusions. But I think one of them, I hoped for a different outcome. It was probably for the best the way it happened. But I still wanted for more.
My book boyfriend is Adrian.
