My Reviews

Ugh, this had me reminiscing about Anita Blake and Richard and the Chicagoland series. Neither left a good taste in my mouth. And neither did this installment.
I just think the author wrote more about a failing possible relationship at the expense of a good action plot. Was this book entertaining? Yes. But it was overshadowed by the frustration of the romance dance that was going on. I’m sorry, this author much like the author of the Chicagoland series doesn’t do angst well. Let it be, and stick to what works.
Although this book was an almost DNF for me, I hung on until the end. And because I did, I’m able to move forward to the next book.
And the secret that I predicted in the very first installment of this series was confirmed in this installment.

My Review

This book is geared toward young adults as young as thirteen. And while it may appeal to adults, it not geared towards them. And it’s fantasy not paranormal. With that said, this book/series is whimsical. It’s an adventure where our young heroine grows into her own.
With that said, there is the loving Jeremiah, who stole my heart long ago. There are obstacles in their path of togetherness, but as always love finds a way, hopefully (no spoilers).
If you’ve followed this book from the beginning, you know that this heroine has gone through a lot. And I’ve had bad luck with series enders this year but this isn’t one of them. The series gets the ending it deserves.
My book boyfriend Jeremiah.

INTERVIEW with Melissa
1.  What was your inspiration for this story?
I’m not really sure.  I knew I wanted to write a fantasy story about a heroine who discovers who she is, but I also wanted to make it different as well.  I think a lot of my life experiences in life have gone into this story, like my jobs, the research I’ve done, all the reading I’ve done by great authors.
2.  What is your current project you are working on?
I’ve had so many ideas for new books.  Some came to me when I was finishing up The Raie’Chaelia.  Whenever I get an idea for a new book, I write it down and put it in its own file folder on my computer, hoping to revisit it later.  I have about 10+ folders like that, so I’m trying to choose which one to pursue first.  Right now, it’s a toss up between a love story/fantasy set in the Old Norse world, a paranormal crime thriller, and a teen romance that deals with the serious issues of high school bullying and teen suicide.

3.  Will you have any more releases this year?
Probably not this year.  More likely in 1014.
4.  What is your favorite thing about writing?
For me, writing is an escape.  When I write, I get to escape into an entirely new world and experience the lives of the many characters that pop into my head and tell me their story.
5.  What is the one thing you want people to know about you?
I write as a hobby.  I don’t do it for money or fame or awards.  It is something I like to do in my spare time.  I can’t think of anything better to do than to escape into a another world that is at times better and more interesting than mine.

My Reviews

I’ll say this again like I have a million times before. I don’t need romance in a story to like it. In fact, this series much like Anita Blake was really passive about romance and focused more on world building, kick ass females and action.
However, if you bait the readers into a romance you create, then go all in. I felt like I had blue balls while reading this and I’m not a guy. It was frustrating for me. I hate interruptions and I’ll leave it at that. I just didn’t think romance is this author’s strong suit.
However with that said, I was shocked at the turn the author took with Derek. And at this point, I shouldn’t be shocked. This author has shown to have no mercy when it comes to her characters to further the plot. Anyway, tears….
And the plot was entertaining as usual and kept me reading throughout.
At the end of the day, I’m still eager to move forward with this series.

(Four Bran Hearts)

Book Summary

Down in Atlanta, tempers – and temperatures – are about to flare…

As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen her share of occupational hazards. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. Now Kate’s going to have to deal with problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.

When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta’s paramilitary clan of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes much more at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest – and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can’t stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive…

My Reviews

Although I continue to enjoy this series, I will say that Kate bothered me a bit in this one. In fact, she was almost like the anit-Anita Blake. What do I mean by that? She constantly put herself down. It was annoying that she discounted every man who tried to say they found her attractive. While I get she was trying to come off as a normal girl, it annoyed me the words she used to suggest a guy didn’t know what he was talking about. Learn to take a compliment.
Also, Red, whom I my heart broke for in the first book, came back to destroy it in the second. I really hated the direction the author took with his character but it worked with the story. Bonus, I really fell for Julie.
All that said, with romance still not a priority in this series so far, the guy that stole the show for me was Bran. I think there may have been tears associated with the direction his character went although I predicted it.
Which brings up the reason for the four stars. Most of the directions the book’s turns I predicted far in advance. Thus, I couldn’t give it perfect rating. However, it was still very good and worth the read.

Magic Bites  (Kate Daniels #1) by Ilona Andrews

This is an adult dystopian urban fantasy novel (Rated R)

(Four and a half Hearts)

Book Summary

When the magic is up, rogue mages cast their spells and monsters appear, while guns refuse to fire and cars fail to start. But then technology returns, and the magic recedes as unpredictably as it arose, leaving all kinds of paranormal problems in its wake.

Kate Daniels is a down-on-her-luck mercenary who makes her living cleaning up these magical problems. But when Kate's guardian is murdered, her quest for justice draws her into a power struggle between two strong factions within Atlanta's magic circles.

The Masters of the Dead, necromancers who can control vampires, and the Pack, a paramilitary clan of shapechangers, blame each other for a series of bizarre killings—and the death of Kate's guardian may be part of the same mystery. Pressured by both sides to find the killer, Kate realizes she's way out of her league—but she wouldn't have it any other way…

My Review

I actually really liked this one. This series has been recommended to me by a lot of my book friends. And I have to say, I really enjoyed it. I had been warned that the world building was a bit confusing. I’m not sure if it was the warning or not, but I didn’t have trouble navigating it.
I have to say, the author’s take on paranormal elements threw me for a loop, but I enjoyed that it was something different and new.
I will say that this story reminded me a lot of pre-sex Anita Blake. You have a kick ass character who can handle her own. I will say that I like Kate Daniels more because she didn’t have Anita’s hang-ups for women’s lib. That is to say, it didn’t bother Kate to have a guy open and door or be a gentleman. She knew she was kick ass without having to prove it all the time.
It also reminded me of Anita Blake in storyline and characters. Curren to me is an earlier version of Jean-Claude and others. Derek is Anita’s Jason. And so on.
Still, I enjoyed this series and quickly moved on to the next book in the series.

Life for Charlotte (Charlie) Harris couldn’t be any better at this moment in time. She has her dream job, she has the extremely wealthy knight in shining armour and she has the best friends a girl could ever ask for. On paper, the beautiful world unfolding at her feet almost appears too good to be true for a working class girl from Manchester right?

But what happens when you gloss over the statistics and realise that the happy bubble you have been living in for the past fifteen months has all been a twisted, torturous path of lies? What if you realised that the person you loved wasn’t who they claimed to be any longer?

With the once sacred and happy memories now turned into hatred and despair, Charlie must now follow her instincts to either forget her past and move on or force the hand that holds the cards to her life to reshuffle the deck before it leads onto the twisted future that lies in store.

What will she choose?

Can she forgive and forget for the only man her heart has ever loved?

(Please note that this book contains strong language and graphic scenes of a sexual nature which are intended for a more mature audience.)

My Review

There is something about contemporary romance that keeps me coming back. Maybe it’s the smut that is entwined, hmmm, lol.
This book is about a girl who meets a boy. Yay, yah, but honestly there is so much more. It’s not typical and will keep you guessing.
One thing I really like is Charlie. She wasn’t whiny, brainless and a crack to step on. She was sassy and had a good head on her shoulders. She didn’t let life get her down or hold her back even with love at stake.
And Callum, he was a sexy, sex god. Damn if only he would leap out of the pages of the book. But I digress.
If you are looking for a solid read that will keep you on your toes with sex that will make your panties burn in flames, pick this one up.

My Review

I was sucked into the story straight away. I hadn’t read a lot of zombie books nor had I begun to watch Walking Dead when I read this one. So for me, it was new and interesting.
What I liked most was the relationship between the characters. They both had issues and should stay apart, yet they were drawn to each other. Both were doing the right thing for different reasons.
The action was good and the story came together well.
Again, having at that point not seen a lot of zombie tales nor having read many, I thought this book had a Resident Evil feel to it. (btw I love that movie/series)

As thief and thief-taker fight for dominance, there can be only be one winner ... but what happens when the stakes are raised and it's no longer just a jewel and Sinead's freedom in play.

My Review

I loved Pleasures of Winter. I LOVED the Pleasures of Summer. I didn’t love this one.
First thing that came to mind was how hard Niall got on Flynn for dating a client (Summer). It was like a lecture of what not to do. But then in this book, Niall doesn’t even give it a passing thought about sleeping with a client/whatever (Sinead).
Plot hole, (SPOILER) The 2nd time Sinead is kidnapped, she acts as though Hall wasn’t there the first time. Niall did too. But I swear they were chasing and “lost” him (Hall) after the rescued her the first time.
Plot hole (SPOILER). Sinead made it seem like she had money to spare or rather her alter ego Lottie did. But once she got out of jail, she acted as though she was broke. Like she spent money to buy something or rather had Niall use his credit card for it and told him she’d pay him back. Then she said to herself later, she didn’t have the money. Then why did she buy the useless thing?
And speaking of money, Niall’s credit card was supposedly max out with that purchase mentioned above for Sinead, but then he’s spending money like he had it.
Then, the LOVE between them just didn’t feel real. I didn’t see how it progressed to love. Really, what did they do that showed love?
Anyway, one bad apple won’t spoil the bunch. I love these authors and loved what they did with the other books. I’m looking forward to the next.
My book boyfriend Niall.

This is an urban fantasy novel (Rated NC-17)

 ♥♥♥♥
(Four Lucas Hearts)

Book Summary

Meet the smart, sexy—supernatural—Women of the Otherworld. This is not your mother's coven…

Kelley Armstrong returns with the eagerly awaited follow-up to Dime Store Magic . Paige Winterbourne, a headstrong young woman haunted by a dark legacy, is now put to the ultimate test as she fights to save innocents from the most insidious evil of all…

In the aftermath of her mother's murder, Paige broke with the elite, ultraconservative American Coven of Witches. Now her goal is to start a new Coven for a new generation. But while Paige pitches her vision to uptight thirty-something witches in business suits, a more urgent matter commands her attention.

Someone is murdering the teenage offspring of the underworld's most influential Cabals—a circle of families that makes the mob look like amateurs. And none is more powerful than the Cortez Cabal, a faction Paige is intimately acquainted with. Lucas Cortez, the rebel son and unwilling heir, is none other than her boyfriend. But love isn't blind, and Paige has her eyes wide open as she is drawn into a hunt for an unnatural-born killer. Pitted against shamans, demons, and goons, it's a battle chilling enough to make a wild young woman grow up in a hurry. If she gets the chance.

My Review

This installment of Paige’s world really centered around Lucas’s world, the Cabals. I have to say, having read this author’s young adult series, this answered a lot of questions there. Although the stories aren’t necessarily entwined, there is overlap with the world building.
Maybe it’s my love of crime/thriller type novels, but the crime magically family element to this story really worked for me. I had an idea of the who (don’t it) but I wasn’t totally sure.
The only drawback for me was the part towards the end. It was a bit predictable how they would end up back in the alley. ß no spoilers. You would have had to have read to understand that cryptic message, lol.
Overall, I liked a lot. However, as much as I liked Eve’s story and have read a novella about her. I’m not anxious for the next book. Maybe more time is needed by me before I can switch to another character in this world.

(Four Magic Filled Hearts)

Book Summary

Paige Winterbourne was always either too young or too rebellious to succeed her mother as leader of one of the world's most powerful elite organizations- the American Coven of Witches. Now that she is twenty-three and her mother is dead, the Elders can no longer deny her. But even Paige's wildest antics can't hold a candle to those of her new charge- an orphan who is all too willing to use her budding powers for evil... and evil is all too willing to claim her. For this girl is being pursued by a dark faction of the supernatural underworld. They are a vicious group who will do anything to woo the young, malleable, and extremely powerful neophyte, including commit murder- and frame Paige for the crime. It's an initiation into adulthood, womanhood, and the brutal side of magic that Paige will have to do everything within her power to make sure they both survive.

My Review

I’ll be honest and say that in this series after reading the Elena story in the first two books, I was resistant to reading about any of the other women. I skipped over the books that weren’t primarily about Elena. I think it took reading the Men of the Otherworld to finally open up my mind to go ahead with the other POVs.
I started this one several times (prior to reading Men of the Otherworld) I could never get into it. It just didn’t have the same feel. And honestly, it shouldn’t. Paige isn’t Elena.
Even though I was able to finally read this one, I can say I was annoyed with the Paige character. She acted like dumb. And she was supposed to have like a Harvard or so education. She did dumb things. Sometimes people make mistakes. But if presented with similar circumstances, most people would think to themselves, something like this happened before. Maybe I shouldn’t jump in so easily. But in this case Paige seemed to lack common sense.
So thank god for Lucas. He was the shining star in this story for me. Where Paige was dumb and Savannah was rude, Lucas was level headed and pure of heart, or so we think.
Overall though, I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the story because I did. I don’t always have to like the main character to enjoy the story. This was one of the exceptions.

(Four Gray Hearts)

Book Summary

FAITH DEVLIN: A poor, outcast child in Prescott, Louisiana, she'd always adored the town's golden boy from afar. But he called her white trash that sultry Southern night when his rich, respected father disappeared, along with her pretty Mom. Now Faith wanted to hate Gray Rouillard...not to feel a powerful surge of desire. But she couldn't quench her passion, any more than she could hide the truth about the past she had waited so long to unravel.

GRAY ROUILLARD: Even when he raised hell, he did it with style. Reckless, charming, and backed by Rouillard money, Gray controlled the town of Prescott -- and Devlin was a name he never wanted to hear again. But when he gazed at Faith Devlin, all he saw was a swirl of tangled sheets and her silken flesh beneath him. To care for her was impossible, unthinkable...because Gray Rouillard planned to use all his power to ruin her.

My Review

In the beginning of the book, it was a hard read. The oppression against Faith specifically and her family deemed “white trash” was hard to swallow. The things that were done at one point in the story made me want to rage.
I just wasn’t sure how I would like Gray after all of that. But I liked how the author handled it. Faith was a push over and didn’t let Gray get off terribly easy. However, this is a HEA story and you know that going in, so I don’t think I gave anything away by saying that.
For me, I like a story that has more than just happy happy joy joy. And this book gave it to me. I went through the entire range of emotions.

Gavin’s officially moving in, and after the New Year, they’ll begin house hunting. But they both know all the talk of gift exchange, whose holiday ornaments go where, and what repairs and remodels will be needed to put Derrick’s house on the market is only a smoke screen.

The holidays have always been a time of loss and mourning for Derrick, but now he has to stay strong as Gavin’s own fears and doubts assail him relentlessly. And when Lukas returns, unexpectedly penitent amid troubling revelations, Gavin has to ask himself whether he can offer Derrick the future he deserves, or whether these first few months of happiness are the best they will ever get.

My Review ~ Terri @mybookboyfriend

First can I say, How can this journey be over?  I just absolutely loved these two. The beautiful thing about this series is you have a couple dealing with a hard issue many face, yet they are so polar opposites to add another layer of fascination to the story.
I love the title of the book. If you dissect it, it tells a story.  Velocity gives both how fast and in what direction the object is moving. In this case, it’s Gavin and Derrick. Not to give a whole lot away, but their relationship was moving at Derrick pace for the most part in books one and two. Now, they are moving at Gavin pace.
The direction of their relationship is uncertain for a number of reasons. But all is revealed between the cover of this book. It unfolds in a way that brings light to a hard topic in a amazing way. This story is the struggle for love to conquer all even for those that feel they may not deserve it. It’s about not caring what others think. That love isn’t defined by gender (we could say the same about race and religion). It’s about not giving into the haters. N0H8!
More importantly it’s about just love.  Their love begins with Derrick’s resistance to change, inertia. It accelerates into something more with Gavin and Derrick’s tenderness and understanding. The velocity in which they move now will all seemingly depend on Gavin.
This has to be one of my favorite m/m romance series. It’s beautifully written in told in a way that is respectful to individuals and the disease. It is heartwarming and touching. I will forever be changed by reading this story. It’s opened my heart.
I look forward to more great things from this author. If you haven’t yet read this series, it’s one to check out right away.

Book Summary

Rising-star blogger Milla Kierce knows she's arrived when she sees the swag basket in her dressing room on the night of her late-night television debut. But before she can bite into the muffin that symbolizes her success, gunfire echoes through the TV studio. She's just hidden herself (mostly in plain sight) when the door flings open. Instead of a gunman, there stands one of the world's most popular rock stars, Gage Daxson, looking for his own way out of danger.

Thrown together, they'll battle a venomous man seeking revenge and his own sexual pleasure, but they may never leave the building again. Distracted by fear, fame, and infamy, can these two somehow find their way to each other?

Equal parts horrifying and hilarious, Debra Anastasia's Late Night With Andres offers more than a few twists and turns—and, of course, enough heat to keep things interesting.

100% of the proceeds generated from sales the novella Late Night with Andres will be donated by Debra Anastasia, Omnific Publishing, and all the staff members involved, to assist in the battle against breast cancer—because cancer sucks.

My Review

When I heard about this story, I jumped at the chance to read. This author wowed me with Poughkeepsie and I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed with this story.
And guess what, I wasn’t. This story is laugh out loud funny. Milla, a girl with blogging success is a free spirit in her own right. She’s funny without trying and throws a monkey wrench at a rock star.
Gage, our reluctant rock star, is re-thinking the idea of fame. He is the hero of this unfortunate event and takes a few for the team, lol.
There are a couple of other players in this story and this author does a wonderful job of giving us different perspectives in order for us to fully see the event that is unfolding.
Hillarious, fast pace, sexy and fun, Late Night with Andres is a novella that will please. It’s short and sassy and not one to disappoint. Not only pick it up because it’s entertaining. Pick it up because the author is donating all the net proceeds to breast cancer research, a worthy cause.
My book boyfriend is Gage, but I’ll give you a dream cast of Milla and Gage.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Debra Anastasia grew up in New York and got a bachelor's degree in political science at SUNY New Paltz. At the start of her marriage, she moved to southern Maryland with her husband. She still doesn't trust crabs and all their legs, though everyone else in her family thinks they're delicious. Her favorite hobbies include knitting, painting furniture and wall murals, and slapping clowns.
Her writing started a decent handful of years ago when along with the dogs, cat, kids, and husband, the voices of characters started whispering stories in Debra's ear. Insomnia was the gateway for the plots that wouldn't give up, wouldn't let go. In the shower, a twist would take hold and--dripping and frenzied--she'd find somewhere, anywhere to write it down.

Interview

Thanks for joining me today.

1. What was your inspiration for this story?

Girl power. I think everything I write has to be about how strong women are. And how a strong woman can fall in love. I was interested to see how a love story could start in an impossible situation.

2. What is your current project you are working on?

I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches on the Poughkeepsie Enhanced Collector's Edition (an interactive app that includes music, video and sounds and so much more!) and getting ready for the release of Return to Poughkeepsie while writing the third book in the series. Plus, the holidays! I should drink more wine.

3. Will you have any more releases this year?

The Collector's Edition and Return to Poughkeepsie will both be coming out before 2013 closes.

4. What is your favorite thing about writing?

The readers, hands down every time. I have the most wonderful, adventurous readers ever.
5. What is the one thing you want people to know about you?

That I hate wearing a bra. I'm not wearing one now.
