SUPRISE RELEASE - If I'd Known by Rebecca Donovan

“What better way to amplify the anticipation than a surprise release—especially for a series filled with suspense and mystery.” – Rebecca Donovan

If I’d Known by Rebecca Donovan

Release Date: December 15th, 2017
Genre: Contemporary YA

IF I'D KNOWN, the surprise first installment in a new, edgy contemporary YA series from Rebecca Donovan, the bestselling author of the Breathing Series is available now!

"We're all cursed—every single one of us."
Lana Peri isn't afraid of telling anyone exactly what she thinks, even if it gets her into trouble—which it usually does. But the thing is, she can't lie. Her unfiltered honesty doesn’t exactly make her many friends, although it does get her kicked out of class regularly. Lana knows the truth will eventually be her undoing. If only she’d known it would begin today.
It’s meant to be a night Lana and her best friends will never forget. And it is... for all the wrong reasons. Lana witnesses not just one, but two violent crimes committed by the same person. Except she can't say a word. Not if she wants to protect her friends.
Lana’s silence will implicate her and inadvertently cover for him. But it’s not like she has a choice. He is powerful. Connected. Untouchable. And a friend of Joey Harrison—the guy Lana is uncharacteristically drawn to the moment they meet. Joey’s also the only one who is told the truth.
His lies will ruin her. Her silence will keep them safe. The truth won’t save any of them.

MY 5 STAR REVIEW

I can't say I was blown away by reading this story. And what you are thinking is wrong. What I mean is that I've come to expect greatness when reading a Donovan story and I wasn't disappointed. I could only be blown away if I hadn't known before going in that it was going to be better than good.

Make no mistake, this intense and thought-provoking story about how one person’s actions can impact others will have you on a journey destined to keep you reading until the final page and enjoying the ride to get there.

How to explain further? Let's say that I love that a story by this author has meaning. That no one is perfect and that we all have flaws. But there is still beauty in them.

I can't say that I loved Lana throughout the story. What I can say is that I loved her snarkines; her love for her mother, family and friends. I loved her strength. I didn't always love her actions, but she's a teen allowed to make mistakes. And without her flaws, we couldn't read and ride this journey of self-discovery with her.

There are too many spoilers to say more.

And as I did while reading, I will wait on the edge for the next installment to take this reading train wherever it will go. I hope I don't have to wait too long.

My Book Boyfriend is Joey.

Excerpt

I see it.
A few steps away, closer than my father’s station: the door to the outside. The guard has gotten lazy, having left the door ajar, a sliver of outside sunlight burning an orange stripe across the floor.
Without thinking, I race for the opening, feeling my strings tense a moment too late, for once not anticipating my move—probably because of how insane it is. My hands are battering rams, shoving the door open, reaching for the sunlight. My body goes rigid as the guard barks, “Hey!” and I feel a monstrous force grab my hands, my feet, my shoulders, my hips, and my head, thrusting them in reverse. I’m airborne, flying back inside, the room a blur of equipment and bright walls and a dark, swirling ceiling, and my father’s eyes—wide and white with fear.
My body hits the floor with a vicious thud that jars my bones and rattles my teeth, which should be punishment enough.
It’s not.
The strings are livid, no longer black, pulsing with red, like blood rushing through a needle. They snap at my skin, cracking like whips—and when they connect they’re like severed electrical wires, sending shocks through my core, to my extremities, to the deepest, darkest, most hidden parts of my soul.
And through my blurry, tear-filled vision, I can see past my father, who’s struggling fruitlessly with the guard, trying to get to me. My heart sinks.
Because the box on the screen is displaying a single sentence:
Message sent.
Darkness folds its silky wings around me.

Dark Heart of Magic (Black Blade #2) by Jennifer Estep

This is a young adult urban fantasy novel (Rated PG-13)

♥♥♥1/2
(Three and a Half Dark Hearts)

Book Summary

Something Wicked This Way Comes...

As a thief, I stick to the shadows as much as possible. But when the head of the Sinclair Family picks me to compete in the Tournament of Blades, there's no escaping the spotlight—or the danger.

Even though he's my competition, Devon Sinclair thinks I have the best shot at winning what's supposed to be a friendly contest. But when the competitors start having mysterious "accidents," it looks like someone will do anything to win—no matter who they hurt.

As if I didn't have enough to worry about, mobster Victor Draconi is plotting against Devon and the rest of my friends, and someone's going around Cloudburst Falls murdering monsters. One thing's for sure. Sometimes, humans can be more monstrous than anything else...

My Review

What to say? This story isn’t smarter than a  fifth grader. This is YA, but I think the only group of readers who might have been surprised by the outcome of the story would have been middle grade readers.

The who done it was so obvious from the first. There wasn’t much mystery or surprise. And I was aggravated with Lila for not finding out sooner. The signs were all there. Clearly, Lila is more brawn than brain. And all the clueless people around her.

Then you add the frustrating romance and I wanted to claw my eyes out. I get that she’s young, but she pretends to be smart. And her reasons for not doing what’s she wants to do don’t make sense. I won’t rehash my rant from the review in the first book.

The bit of a twist wasn’t a shock either. Granted I assumed the bonds between were paternal, but I knew that the bond existed. I’ll leave it at that and not say whether I was right or wrong.

Overall, thank goodness for the ending or I wouldn’t read the rest of the series.

Cold Burn of Magic (Black Blade #1) by Jennifer Estep

This is a young adult urban fantasy novel (Rated PG-13)

♥♥♥
(Three Magic Hearts)

Book Summary

There Be Monsters Here. . .

It's not as great as you'd think, living in a tourist town that's known as "the most magical place in America." Same boring high school, just twice as many monsters under the bridges and rival Families killing each other for power.

I try to keep out of it. I've got my mom's bloodiron sword and my slightly illegal home in the basement of the municipal library. And a couple of Talents I try to keep quiet, including very light fingers and a way with a lock pick.

But then some nasty characters bring their Family feud into my friend's pawn shop, and I have to make a call--get involved, or watch a cute guy die because I didn't. I guess I made the wrong choice, because now I'm stuck putting everything on the line for Devon Sinclair. My mom was murdered because of the Families, and it looks like I'm going to end up just like her. . .

My Review

From the opening page, the plot was too damn predictable for me. I knew the bad guy by the first few things he said. There weren’t many surprises at all. Worse yet the main character Lila was forgettable and not very likable.

I get that she’s a teenager. I get she had to fend for herself and doesn’t have the tools for relationships. But her ‘I hate him, I want him, I can’t have him, I might feel for him, I shouldn’t want him, he’s got to go’ annoyed the heck out of me. She’s a teen. Yet she acted like any sort of relationship with this guy would spell forever. And she’s street smart enough to know better.

Besides predictability and an annoying character, there was a glaring plot hole. I’m going to spell it out because I don’t think it’s that big of a spoiler. Lila tells the reader she’s left her cell in her purse back in a parking lot she’s fled. She tells us as a reason why she doesn’t use it during the action. When the action is over but not the scene, she says she pulls her cell out and makes a call. (JIC, it’s between Ch28 & 29). It’s a glaring mistake that someone should have caught.

Overall though, there are some questions I still have. And the world building was interesting enough for me to continue. However, book two may be it if things don’t progress. I’ll have to cut my losses if that book doesn’t work out.

But will they tear us apart

My Review

Some books make you smile, others make you cry. While the best of the books will give you all the feels and chills that will leave you wanting for more. This is true with Labeled Love.

I had no idea what to expect when I got this book. What I couldn’t imagine was picking up a book from a first-time writer and after reading, believing she knocked it out of the park.

The characters are rich on paper they step into your mind in Technicolor. The sound of their voices is as if they were speaking in your ear. The emotions they feel will make you swoon or want to be there for them. Hell, you want to be them. As you turn each page, you won’t want it to end.

When you get there, you will be begging for more. I can’t say enough good things about this book other than STEP OFF, JACE JAMES is MINE! Lol

If I had an award to give for BEST NEW AUTHOR OF THE YEAR, it would easily go to Danielle Rocco. This book is amazing and I look forward to more great things from her.

PICK THIS ONE UP. It’s on a ONE DAY ONLY SALE for 99 cents, today (August 6th) only.  It’s a bargain at that price but even for a few bucks more, you won’t regret the purchase.

My Review

In recent years, more and more senseless acts of violence have invaded our school. I was particularly interested to see how things would turn out.

I think for me the biggest disappointment from this story was that I didn’t even begin to connect with the characters until about 40% in. I think most of that had to do with how the story was told. While the multiple POVs should have given me more insight, instead it hampered the story because we would get snippets of each POV in a chapter ending on tiny cliffies. It should have made me want to turn the page to find more, instead, I didn’t connect with characters enough to care what happened.

One of the other big issues for me is Claire’s brother Matt. This isn’t a spoiler. He has lupus or so we are told by Claire. Yet he acts like he’s mildly retarded and has some other disabling disease that I know for a fact isn’t a result of lupus. As I’ve had friends and family with the disease and none of them are retarded or disabled in any way. So I thought it was rather odd for the author to portray the lupus in such an incorrect light. Lupus is when you’re immunity system attacks your organs. And this isn’t something you are born with per se. It’s something that manifests itself later in life. Thus it’s not the cause of retardation or being unable to walk. And it’s managed with drugs and you can live a rather long life with minor disruptions. Most people who walk by a person with lupus would never know they have it. So for the author to mention it without explaining what else was wrong with Matt (unless I missed it) seems unfair to those dealing with those diseases.

Other than that, while I liked the diversity of the characters such as race, sexual orientation, jock or not, I thought that the important stories around the main characters that should have been reminders and morals of stories were lost in the multiple jumping around POV.s I think one POV per chapter or even telling the story in third person would have served this story better.

I also think that the blog post and tweets were unnecessary and added no value to the story.

Still with all that said, there was something there. I did tear up, not so much of the characters as the situation lended itself to so many emotions. Just sad situation. I just wished the story and the characters would have been fleshed out better.

Don’t take my word on it. If the blurb captures you, you should give it a try. You might love it.

My book boyfriend Tomas.

Fury (Blur Trilogy #2) by Steven James

Fury (Blur Trilogy #2) by Steven James

This is a young adult suspense/mystery/thriller novel (Rated PG-13)

♥♥♥♥
(Four Wolf Hearts)

Book Summary

The disturbing visions that helped Daniel Byers solve a deadly mystery have finally quieted, and the sixteen-year-old basketball star is looking forward to things settling back to normal. But when his father mysteriously disappears, Daniel realizes that the key to finding his dad rests in deciphering his chilling hallucinations.

Soon, long-buried secrets begin to surface, revealing clues that could help him locate his father. But as the past collides with the present and reality begins to blur around him, Daniel faces a race against time to save his dad before it’s too late.

Filled with pulse-pounding suspense, Fury continues the thrilling young adult Blur Trilogy from bestselling author Steven James.

My Review

It’s so refreshing to read a young adult novel told by a male lead and written by a man. There is such truth and insight into the character. Daniel reads believable all the way through and I just love his character that much more.

This book is a semi continuation from the last book. Although we have a new mystery closer to home, we get more answers. I feel I’m rooting now for both Daniel and his Dad. And Daniel’s friends are just great.

Can I mention the romance factor in this story took it up a notch? It’s still not a romance novel or even a romantic suspense novel for that matter, but I thought I would mention. Again the romance is naturally occurring as an ongoing part of Daniel’s life but in no way is the center of the story.

Again, I picked the who done it but changed my mind so many times, I can’t even claim victory; which again is a good thing. I love to be surprised and wrong about twists in the story.

I’m bummed about having to wait until next year for the final installment. Parts of me wish the series wouldn’t end. And for those that don’t like cliffies. There isn’t really a cliffy. This isn’t a romantic entanglement story. So you can read without fear of cliff hangers and having to wait until next year for the final installment. There are however still mysteries surrounding Daniel that aren’t completely answered. But that’s the thing about series.

Audio Review
Nick Podehl did a fabulous job on narration. He easily slipped between male and female believably and kept all the main characters including some minor separate and distinct.

(Four and a Half Blurred Hearts)

Book Summary

The isolated town of Beldon, Wisconsin, is shocked when a high school freshman’s body is found in Lake Algonquin. Just like everyone in the community, sixteen-year-old Daniel Byers believes that Emily Jackson’s death was accidental. But at her funeral, when he has a terrifying vision of her, his world begins to rip apart at the seams.

Convinced that Emily’s appearance was more than just a mere hallucination, Daniel begins to look carefully into her death, even as he increasingly loses the ability to distinguish fantasy from reality.

What’s real? What’s not? Where does reality end and madness begin?

As Daniel struggles to find the truth, his world begins to crumble around him as he slips further and further into his own private blurred reality.

Full of mind-bending twists and turns, Blur launches a new trilogy of young adult thrillers from Steven James, a master of suspense.

My Review

I’m never sure what I’m going to get with a new author, but this one knocked it out of the park for me. By the time you read this review, I’ve moved on from his YA series to his adult one.

Steven has created a rich lovable character in Daniel. He’s the school jock but clueless when it comes to girls which makes him so endearing. He’s also got a got head on his shoulders and a good heart despite the rejections he fills from being abandoned by one of his parents.

Let me just say to all my romance lovers, there is a little romance in this book but it’s organic to the story. It’s a part of Daniel’s life not the center or the crux of the plot. So if you’re looking for that, you might be disappointed. This story is about Daniel and all the mystery that surrounds him and strange things that happen as he solves a mystery. And I should mention his merry band of friends that help him along the way. They are also well constructed.

I can honestly say that yes, although I guessed the who done it; I guessed that person along with several other, never really deciding on any one. So the author did a good job of keeping me guessing.
Overall, I was anxious to start the next book in the series to get more answers about Daniel. Since I’m reviewing that book tomorrow, I won’t say more.

Book Summary

Only Aaron and his fellow Nephilim can protect the world from Satan’s wrath in this riveting finale to the New York Times bestselling The Fallen series.

Satan is determined to create his own Hell on Earth and has unleashed unfathomable chaos into the world. Cut off from Heaven, humanity’s only hope for salvation rests with eighteen-year-old Aaron and the other Nephilim who fight by his side. These angelic warriors will protect civilization and restore God’s favor no matter the cost. But there can be only one champion—and defeat is eternal.

The battle lines have been drawn. Armageddon is here.

My Book Boyfriend

I was left underwhelmed with this one. I had so many high hopes after the first book. But it felt like the author kept trying to steer Vilma down another path. In fact, we learn that the path had been sanctioned by someone. It seemed to distract me from the rest of what was going on because I was going to be pissed if it happened.

Then the ending battle was pretty good. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t over right away. I liked how sacrifices were made and certain things were overcome. However, I agree with one reviewer how said Satan had it a little too easy early on. I though the Nephilim would play a large role than they did. I will say poor Cameron came off as a total weakling in this one.

And lastly, the ending felt slightly unfinished. Especially with the Vilma thing. What happened to the other person in that scenario? They were there (I’m purposefully not using singular pronouns for spoiler sake.)

Also, what about the humans??? How do they feel after all of this? What is the world really like? We only get a glimpse of the fighters but not the people.

Anyway, it wasn’t a bad ending, just slightly disappointed.

My book boyfriend Aaron.
