Black Widow (Elemental Assassin #12) by Jennifer Estep

Black Widow (Elemental Assassin #12) by Jennifer Estep

This is an adult urban fantasy novel (Rated NC-17)

 ♥♥♥1/2
(Three and a half Spider Hearts)

Book Summary

There’s nothing worse than a cruel, cunning enemy with time to kill—and my murder to plan.

With wicked Fire elemental Mab Monroe long gone, you’d think I could finally catch a break. But someone’s always trying to take me down, either as Gin Blanco or my assassin alter-ago. Now along comes the Spider’s new arch-nemesis, the mysteriously named M. M. Monroe, who is gleefully working overtime to trap me in a sticky web of deceit.

The thing is, I’m not the only target. I can see through the tangled threads enough to know that every bit of bad luck my friends have been having lately is no accident—and that each unfortunate “coincidence” is just one more arrow drawing ever closer to hitting the real bulls-eye. Though new to Ashland, this M. M. Monroe is no stranger to irony, trying to get me, an assassin, framed for murder. Yet, as my enemy’s master plan is slowly revealed, I have a sinking feeling that it will take more than my powerful Ice and Stone magic to stop my whole life from going up in flames.

My Review

There is not a lot to say other than Gin never seems to come on top without going to the bottom. I just wish that the book started on a high note for once before she fails only to ultimately succeed.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD
This book had a lot of plot holes. For one, Gin in every other book listens to the stones for intruders when she enters a place. Yet this one time she didn’t. She did listen to the stones for something just not to see if someone had entered the building. It was so obvious when it happened that I knew what was coming next.
And Gin never puts a body in the pork pit. Always outside. All of a sudden she has one inside and Sophia doesn’t take care of it right away. Again, it was obvious what was then going to happen next.
Gin breaks out of captivity and she’s drives and parks in front of the pork pit with people chasing her??? Really. She’s always said she has hidey holes all over the city. How obvious to go there.
And the list goes on. And this author is better than that. She could have tightened up the holes even using the same basic road map. All and all, I was disappointed.
The thing is memory is short. And six months from now, I would have forgotten my disappointment or the reasons why and I’ll buy again. And as long as it delivers, this memory may continue to remain forgotten.
I still recommend this series on a whole. It’s good.

Book Summary

Gin Blanco is hard-nosed, sexy, and lethal. Nicknamed “The Spider,” she’s a stone elemental assassin who brings her unique mix of magic and tact to every assignment, no matter the target.

There’s a new drug on the streets of Ashland, and its name “Burn” sums up the potent effect it has on its users. When one of her restaurant employees is threatened by dealers of the drug, Gin steps in to set things straight...

My Review

As much as I love Gin, I was annoyed and tired of the storyline which seems to repeat itself almost. Owen for a lot of the book is in the background. And while I know that UF is not romance guided, it feels much like an afterthought.
However, on that note, the time we did get with Owen, the author really stepped up her sexy game. I almost blushed at the scenes (and we all know I read far racier stuff. Let’s just call it a surprise.)
And in this book I wanted to shove my foot up Brea’s assss. She annoyed me so. But I love some Finnagin and face it, I’m into Owen’s BFF too. His name just left my brain….
Anyway, it was still an interesting read and we get some solid answers. A few of them shocked me, surprise, surprise.
Audio Review
Lauren Fortgang is just simply splendid as Gin. She also does excellent job of keeping all the other main characters unique.
