Conscience (Bellator Saga #2) by Cecilia London

Conscience (Bellator Saga #2) by Cecilia London

This is an adult dystopian novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a Half Hearts)

Book Summary

An escape plan foiled….

A determined woman….

One last tiny sliver of hope….

Jack will find me.

The Fed wants answers. And Caroline is determined not to provide them. They pull out all the stops, testing her sanity, testing her strength, testing her humanity.

Jack will find me.

Subject to cruel and merciless treatment at the hands of a government she once trusted, Caroline clings to her sole lifeline, her only chance at maintaining her tenuous hold on reality: her memories of her husband, Jack, her children, Marguerite and Sophie, and the friends who mean the world to her.

Jack will find me.

But what happens when hope starts to fade? How long until her interrogators cross over into the unspeakable sadism she fears ? How long before she finally breaks apart?

Part Two of a Six Part Saga. Conscience (approximately 120,000 words) is not a standalone and must be read after the first book in the Bellator Saga, Dissident. All books in the series end in a cliffhanger. For readers 18+. This book contains adult situations including graphic violence, explicit (consensual) sex and light BDSM, psychological and physical trauma, and an oftentimes raw, dark, and gritty plot.

It's free for a time, here are the links.

My Book Boyfriend

This author has me wrapped around her finger. I’m aching to get my hands on the next installment. In this one, things change. The story is still going forward from the past and the present. And Jack gets dreamer by the second.

There are certain parts of this book that may be uncomfortable for some. But it’s certainly not the darkest thing I’ve read. It doesn’t even come close. It’s not dark like say Captive in the Dark, Bang, Consequences, etc. So don’t get scared. But there are things that will make you squirm.

Although we learn more about how Jack and Caroline got to this point, there certainly are unanswered questions like where will we go from here. But that’s a question at the end of every book in a series except the last.

This book was also sexy as hell, I’ll just warn you. This author surprised me with that and that’s a good thing.

Overall, although I categorize this as dystopian, it’s not a “save the world” kind of book even though in a small way it is. It’s more that the world is still the same but there is such a fundamental change in the way the government is run, it’s worth the dystopian categorization. But it’s as much as a love story/thriller as well.

My book boyfriend Jack.

Mai Tai'd Up (Cocktail #4) by Alice Clayton

Mai Tai'd Up (Cocktail #4) by Alice Clayton

This is an adult contemporary romance

 ♥♥♥♥
 (Four Fun Hearts)

Book Summary

Looking for the perfect mix of smart, sexy, and sassy? Mai Tai’d Up continues New York Times bestselling author Alice Clayton’s Cocktail series, which began with Wallbanger and continued with Rusty Nailed and Screwdrivered.

The gossip mill in the seaside community of Monterey is churning about Chloe Patterson, the newcomer who is starting a sanctuary for rescued pit bulls. It’s rumored that she’s a former beauty queen (true) who ditched her fiancĂ© the morning of their wedding (also true). And that while she’s not looking for a new man, the good-looking local veterinarian has his eye on her. Absolutely, positively true.

When Lucas Campbell isn’t at the family veterinary clinic, he’s paddle boarding in Monterey Bay. Recently single, he’s definitely not in the market for a new relationship, but he still can’t resist taking a second, third, and fourth look at the recent arrival of Miss Golden State.

Neither Lucas nor Chloe has any interest in being tied down. Being tied up, however—now there’s a thought. But are a few Mai Tais, a moonlit night, and the music of Frank Sinatra enough to allow them both to forget their past? Let’s hope Ol’ Blue Eyes knows what he’s doing.

Mix one part tiki, one part kinky, and a splash of old black magic matchmaking, and it’s time to be . . . Mai Tai’d Up.

My Review

Okay, let me just say I wasn’t a lover of Wallbanger. I thought it overused classic funny lines without using then in a new and inventive way. I also didn’t care for wanting a guy after hearing him through the wall, but let us not go there. This isn’t a rehash of that book. I do miss the cat though.
So let me just say that I didn’t read the other two books in the series and found I didn’t have to in order to enjoy this one.
This story was really cute and predictable, but I found myself wanting to see it all enfold anyway.
My only problem in this story was Lucas. He was kind of a dick in the story. VERY MINOR SPOILERS ALERT. First, he leaves our leading lady at some point without even arranging for her a ride home or inquiring if she’d be okay without him to drive her home seeing as he brought her to this particular place. Then the heroine doesn’t even call him on it. I wasn’t even mad so much as the why he left her. They were friends after all. But not caring that he’s leaving her without wheels to get home (she does get a ride) pissed me off. I’m hoping that this was an oversight of the author and her beta readers didn’t call her on it. But for me, it was a big point against Lucas.
Then there was his reaction to the “reveal”. I’ll leave it at that. It was a bit over the top considering how he comes back to his senses later. And again, our push over heroine says nothing and takes it. No wonder she almost married someone she didn’t love. I guess it’s possible that’s a character flaw, but that would mean that our heroine had no growth in the story and continues not to stand up for herself. And that’s not good for a story either. Unless that’s part of the plot. In this case, the character was supposed to have grown.
END of Minor SPOILERS.
For those two reasons, I couldn’t give it perfect marks. But it does inspire me to give this author another try.
Without much choice, Lucas is my book boyfriend.
