Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

Sweet Peril  (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

This is a young adult paranormal romance (Rated PG-16)

♥♥1/2
(Two and half Perilous Hearts)

Book Summary

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

My Review

A SPOILER REVIEW – no way around it.
Okay, here we go. Look, I’m honest about my feelings. I think it can only help readers and authors alike if you are honest. Here is a book written that had a ton of potential. In fact even after that major unbelievable set up in the first book where a Conservative mother lets her daughter go on a road trip with a guy she met in less than a week, I read this book. I tried to get past that in that book. And beside that unbelievable bit, Sweet Evil was an intriguing story.
But here. I have 2 major problems with this story. And I have a minor one. So I’ll start with that. The first half of the book was really rather boring. A lot of nothing happened and could have easily been cut to add more interesting things. Days go by without her explaining. But she explained other stuff that really didn’t add anything to the story. UGH. It reminded me of that third Fallen book by Lauren Kate where the female lead regressed into incessant memories for the whole of the book. And that is a place no author would want to go. I would have rather heard interactions at school with Anna's friends. And if that was the only problem, I could have added another star to my rating. Sadly it wasn't.
Okay, so this is probably my biggest issue. Anna to save her own ass pretends to be “working” (and if you haven’t read the story, you won’t understand my meaning with that word). So here she is, going to parties and enticing people to drink and party (drugs are happening to). She’s even indulges herself “to save her own ass” (not drugs). Yet, she won’t have sex….. Well, she needs to remain pure after all. (that’s sarcasm). Really. If only Anna would have said no to sex because she wants to wait until marriage or true love. But no, she says she won't have sex ONLY because she needs to be able to hold the sword of righteousness. Really?? Where is the purity in that? Purity is not only in actions, it's in thoughts. And no one is pure. We all fall short in the eyes of God. It is what lies in our heart that fuels are actions that determines whether we are worthy or not, not your sexual status. And like Anna getting drunk or high can't lead to sex?

Oh, purity. Somehow because she’s repentant about encouraging underage drinking and gets people "safe" rides homes, God will overlook that. In fact, she can go to 3rd base with Kai, but not have sex and she’s still pure. Next thing Anna will say is that anal or oral sex will be okay as long as she remains a virgin. (And by that I mean vaginal sex. And that’s bull) Really. Hey, here's a thought. Have "safe" sex with Kai and repent afterwards and she's covered. It worked with the drinking thing. (yeah, right).

What are we really saying to teen girls? That their value lies in between their legs. That, if you aren't a virgin, God will not find you worthy. That's laughable. Sin is sin. No sin is worse than another in his eyes.(And no I'm not encouraging teens to have sex). And what if a virgin is raped? Will she not be able to hold the sword of righteousness? Somehow, I don’t think purity is measured by your V Card. I think its soul deep determined by your actions (more than just sex). Hey how about selflessness.
Which leads me into my second problem with the story. The main focus of the story is recruiting members of the Neph to help in a future battle. They talk about keeping the members safe. Yet, 5 of them remain silent in the water as one of them is killed. What the hell? And Anna’s pure? Where is fighting for what’s right? What is a hero? It’s not someone who rides in with an army at his back. A hero is one that charges in alone to save the people with no regard to their own safety. That’s a hero. That is someone pure at heart. Not selfish Neph who’d let one of their own die without even trying a little to save their member out of fear. It is within fear that heroes are born.
Sorry, if this book didn’t have a sword of righteousness that could only be held by someone pure, opps, I mean virgin, maybe I wouldn’t have had such a huge problem. My only problem then would be with a weak heroine, who if left to save the world, would allow everyone to die as long as she lived. She lacks backbone, selflessness, and a purity she thinks she has.

I think if this author would have had an a brutally honest beta reader like me, this could have been an awesome story. Such a shame.

My Review

When I read, generally I’m looking to step out of my reality and into another. Which is one of the main reasons I prefer paranormal over many genres. And that is exactly what I get here. More than that, this isn’t a vampire story. Nope. This is something totally unique.
Added to that, is the wonderful writing. Beautiful descriptions draw you in a paint a picture in your head.
Then in steps our heroine. And she’s not a saint nor a devil. She’s a girl that’s had some tough knocks and makes the best of it. She’s got some snark and a whole lot of guts. And that it seems will be what she will need to make it through this adventure.
And her captor isn’t a saint either. Dark, broodingly handsome, his reasons for taking her are purely selfish.
If you want a fresh voice, with beautifully written ideas, characters and landscape, check this one out.

Fifth Grave Past the Light (Charley Davidson #5) by Darynda Jones

Fifth Grave Past the Light  (Charley Davidson #5) by Darynda Jones

This is an adult urban fantasy. (Rated NC-17)

 ♥♥♥♥
(Four Reyes Hearts)

Book Summary

Charley Davidson may not look like your everyday, run-of-the-mill grim reaper, but she has vowed to reap grimness wherever she goes despite this unfortunate fact. Sadly, she gets sidetracked when the sexy, sultry son of Satan, Reyes Farrow, moves in next door. As he is the main suspect in her arson case, she is determined to stay away from him until she can find out the truth. According to her therapist, however, she lacks conviction.

When dead women start appearing in her apartment - lost, confused and terrified beyond reason - Charley has no choice but to ask for Reyes's help, especially when it becomes apparent that her own sister Gemma is the serial killer's next target. With his ability to observe incorporeally, surely he can find out who's responsible. And even if he can't, he is the one man alive who could protect Gemma no matter who or what came at her. But he wants something in return: Charley. All of her - body and soul. And to keep her sister safe, it is a price she is willing to pay…

My Review

I love this series so much that I can give one book a pass. And even though this book was enjoyable, it wasn’t up to the same level as the previous books.
One thing is the Reyes bit. I’m glad in a way it appears that she’s done fighting her feelings. But on the same hand, it almost feels like she’s going to pull back again and that will just annoy me.
Although the book has snark and some grin moments, I didn’t find myself laughing out loud like I did in previous books. It just wasn’t as funny this go around.
Yet, that wasn’t it either. I think in this story although the mystery was about the dead girls in her apartment, the story didn’t seem centered around that at all. The book felt like it lacked some focus.
Still, this being my least favorite book in the series despite some really steamy scenes with Reyes beats hands down many books by other authors at their best. So, it’s really this authors fault for setting the bar so high in each book she’s written, lol.

Audio Review
Lorelei King does a fabulous job as usual. She was tailor made to play Charlie and Reyes.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

One day, on her way home from work as a sales manager, A. M. Hargrove, realized her life was on fast forward and if she didn't do something soon, it would quickly be too late to write that work of fiction she had been dreaming of her whole life.  So, she rolled down the passenger window of her fabulous (not) company car and tossed out her leather briefcase.  Luckily, the pedestrian in the direct line of fire was a dodge ball pro and had über quick reflexes enabling him to avoid getting bashed in the head.  Feeling a tad guilty about the near miss, A. M. made a speedy turn down a deserted side street before tossing her crummy, outdated piece-of-you-know-what lap top out the window.  She breathed a liberating sigh of relief, picked up her cell phone, called her boss and quit her job.  Grinning, she made another call to her hubs and told him of her new adventure (after making sure his heart was beating properly again).

So began A. M. Hargrove's career as a YA/NA and Adult Romance writer. Her books include Kissing Fire, Edge of Disaster, Shattered Edge, the series the Guardians of Vesturon (Survival, Resurrection, Determinant, Beginnings and reEmergent), Dark Waltz and the upcoming release Tragically Flawed.

Other than being in love with being in love, she loves chocolate, ice cream and coffee and is positive they should be added as part of the USDA food groups.

Book Blurb

No one's tried to kill Harry Dresden for almost an entire year, and his life finally seems to be calming down. For once, the future looks fairly bright. But the past casts one hell of a long shadow.

An old bargain has placed Harry in debt to Mab, monarch of the Winter Court of the Sidhe, the Queen of Air and Darkness-and she's calling in her marker. It's a small favor he can't refuse...one that will trap Harry Dresden between a nightmarish foe and an equally deadly ally, and one that will strain his skills- and loyalties-to their very limits.

It figures. Everything was going too well to last...

My Review

I can’t say I was in love with this installment. As I was listening, I found myself drifting at times and having to “rewind” to try and listen again.
Harry is in his usual trouble and this time up the fey (Queen Mab & Summer court), Marcone, and a few new players were in town. I can’t say I wasn’t pleased that Kincaid wasn’t there. The mystery was interesting and the stakes were high. When I finally got into the story it was hard not to finish.
Still, I found myself hoping for more romance, which only says that there was something missing that I thought I needed that element. And we were left off wondering what was going on between two characters. I have to say that was motivation enough to pick up the next book right away. I haven’t already read that installment. But I’ll keep my lips sealed on that one.

Affliction (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #22) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Affliction  (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #22) by Laurell K. Hamilton

This is an adult paranormal fantasy novel (Rated NC-17)

♥♥♥♥1/2
(Four and a Half Zombie Hearts)

Book Summary

Some zombies are raised. Others must be put down. Just ask Anita Blake.

Before now, she would have considered them merely off-putting, never dangerous. Before now, she had never heard of any of them causing human beings to perish in agony. But that’s all changed.

Micah’s estranged father lies dying, rotting away inside from some strange ailment that has his doctors whispering about “zombie disease.”

Anita makes her living off of zombies—but these aren’t the kind she knows so well. These creatures hunt in daylight, and are as fast and strong as vampires. If they bite you, you become just like them. And round and round it goes…

Where will it stop?
Even Anita Blake doesn’t know.

My Review

All my favorite men or most at least are in this installment. And sadly she will not sleep with all of them. This edition features more plot not related to the ardor than other installments. Sad but true. Still, I loved this one.
I am going to give a tiny spoiler. Edward is in this installment. That should tell you something. When he’s there, the story is more focused on the mystery and not sex.
Still, there are a few things in this one that bother me. Call me selfish, but I want to have my cake and eat it too and not invite anyone else to the buffet. If you’ve read, it mostly has to do with Micah. I understand, but it still bothers me. At least in this installment it’s just information. I didn’t have to see it in action. UGH.
And this story deals with the latest craze, Zombies. And boy it’s going to be a blood bath. There is also a lot of conclusions about how everyone fits in Anita’s life and the ending is a damn teaser to what’s to come. I can’t wait.

For those of you who love Nora from the Original Sinners series and like paranormal, Anita is your girl. They are cut almost from the same cloth in some respects.
Audio Review
Kimberly Alexis is the master. God she does an assume job with this series. Her narration is spot on.
My book boyfriend and a true hero of the story Nathaniel. And I never thought I’d say that. (At least she’s not long winded about his hair in this story.) And I may get his hair color wrong. Forgive me. And I'm giving you Micah too.
