My Review

  

I’ve read many books by this author, but mostly of the young adult and paranormal variety. I have read the Gamble brothers series, but outside of that I haven’t dived into any other new adult or adult books by this author (or penned under  J. Lynn).

I was super pleased with this book. It wasn’t a fluffy contemporary romance with no substance. In fact, it’s more like a bowl full of warm romance with dashes of suspense, mystery and intrigue. I was totally full and satisfied when I finished it. In fact, I woke up in the morning with about half way to finish. And I didn’t stop reading choosing to skip breakfast in favor of reading the whole morning away.  I hardly noticed I missed a meal  I was so caught up in the story. Well, until I finished at lunch. Then I headed to get food.

As a mystery (who done it) kind of reader, I knew who “done it” from the first meeting and my guess never wavered from that individual and was confirmed at the reveal moment in the story. Even thought I knew, it didn’t take away my enjoyment of the story.

I can tell you that the story is multilayered. I was disarmed by the beginning of the story. I was also intrigued with the ‘what and why’ of Reece and Roxy, and was a little pissed at her for different reasons. But Roxy was a sparkler with fire in her gut. She was no whinny female.

And Reece won my heart from the start. Book boyfriends with a kind heart and a hard exterior tend to be my top book boyfriends, like Aiden from JLA’s Covenant series. While I can appreciate the bad boys with snarky attitudes like Daemon from the JLA’s Lux series, I tend not to like the guy that’s an ass all in the name of “saving the girl.” Reece was the former and I fell hard for him. Read and you will too.

I can’t really say more other than this was my first book in the Fall Away series. And it was easily read as a standalone. However, my only compliant, which is my fault really, is I suspect that the first few chapters which were a bit slow for me, dealt with other characters from the previous books in the series. For me, those chapters really didn’t add to the meat of this story. However, I suspect had I read the other books I would have been grateful to catch up with those previous staring couples and would have enjoyed those few chapters more.

My Review

 

So I adore this author as a writer and a person. She is really cool and sweet and her imagination is boundless. And this story…

While this series like her other YA series reminds me of others (this one the Cambion series), I do really enjoy it. While the basic elements of forbidden kiss that could kill and two boys of light and darkness much like the world building in the Cambion series, there are other elements that are different. Okay, the whole save the world thing isn’t… but the use of gargoyles is.

And thus, I’m drawn into this series wondering how things will play out. Layla herself annoys me some. But she’s seventeen and clueless at times which is understandable. I get annoyed by her I can’t kiss Zayne therefore we cannot be. It’s like saying to a paralyzed person, never wish for love since you can’t be horizontal. Personally I think that’s the wrong message to send, but that’s me. There is so much more to love than kissing. Still, I’m sucked into this story like crazy. JLA has that effect on me.

And I must say I was rooted into TEAM Roth in book one. But I can say for sure I’m so TEAM Zayne after book two. I love a good triangle but at the same time I think I might hate them too. Both boys deserve love and I don’t want to see either of them hurt. UGH!

Yet, I kinda want the so called Good Boy to win for once. I mean, Zayne has been there for Layla from day one. The only thing that held them back is the kiss. And I mean really, can’t they overcome not lip locking. I will be annoyed if Roth ends up with the girl at the conclusion of this series. It’s too damn predictable and totally unfair. But then again, I was all about Roth in book one. Who knows what the next book will bring.

This story had action, drama, teenage angst and confessions of great importance. It was an attention grabber and holder. It totally rocked.

If you enjoy YA paranormal romances, you have to pick this one up. If you are already a fan, check out Beg for Mercy, quite similar to this story, and came out long before this one.

Audio Review

Saskia Maarleveld did an okay job. I found that her male and female voices were quite similar making it hard sometimes to know who was speaking without dialogue tags. But overall, it was a good listen.

My Review

Granted this isn’t Divergent even if Divergent would have been paranormal and not dystopian but it is classic JLA. My personal belief is that this author is at her best when writing angsty hormone filled young adult stories like her Lux and Convent series. What makes this one good is it is more unique in its opening book than the other two, not to take away from those amazing series.

I wasn’t sure what to expect after reading the first line of the blurb one kiss could be her last. It read much like another young adult paranormal series I read long ago. Kind of the same with a “good guy” that the heroine shouldn’t be with and a “bad boy” she’s perfect for.  And the whole kissing theme is kind of the same. But the plot arc is different I guess.

If you are a YA urban fantasy lover, this book may not be for you. This is more of a paranormal romance story because the focus is more on hormone filled moments. And in my opinion, there is nothing wrong with it. There is still world building and a problem or problems to solve, but they center more around the heroine and her life. Much like a coming to age story.

And there were times when I wanted to smack Layla, but she’s lived a sheltered life. I couldn’t blame her for some of her reactions and responses to certain things. She did however break out of her shell at some point in the book and I’m totally looking forward to the next one.

There are two hunky guys in this one. I can’t say it’s much of a love triangle when one guy isn’t available for a number of reasons. And it’s only her love for him that makes some sort of triangle. Anyway, I’m anxious for the next book in the series and will snap it up as soon as the audio version becomes available.

Audio Review
Saskia Maarleveld did a good job with narration. She did a great job with keeping the characters sounding different.

My Review

 

The End. I hate those words at the end of a book I totally enjoyed. I hate it worse when it’s the end of a series. It sucks eggs to say goodbye to a series you love.

The last book had EPIC moments and a cliffy that spelled EPIC for the end of this series. While I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I think my expectations were way too high. The Covenant series ended EPICally, so I expected the same.

It wasn’t as EPIC as I hoped. The ending felt a bit rushed and everything wrapped up way to easy. Without giving away spoilers, my question is with the help that was received, wouldn’t that help take advantage once they had the advantage? If you’ve read, maybe you understand my cryptic words.

I still have questions and maybe there is a spin off in the future. And Dawson. Many of you know I prefer Dawson over Daemon. Call me weird. I pick my book boyfriends for many reasons. But I will say, I grew to love the ass the Daemon was and appreciate who he either came to be or revealed himself to be.

In the end, this series is a must read for YA paranormal lovers. It has it all, love, romance, angst, and hotness.

However…

Audio Review

Justine Eyre and Rob Shapiro almost destroyed the enjoyment of this book because they couldn’t pronounce Daemon. I mean logically Dae (two vowels the first one has the long sound Kindergarten reading). They pronounce Daemon -> Demon, completely ignoring the A. And Justine Eyre also makes a story sound so damn depressing. I still haven’t finished Archangel’s Storm or moved forward with Nalini Singh’s series simply because of Justine Eyre (and maybe the writing too).
