Book Summary

My Review

When you think of H.D. Gordon, you think of the young adult Alexa Montogmery series.  This book doesn’t even come close to the same category as that one.  This is an adult college age psychological thriller with some paranormal elements but not the vampire kind.

Let’s start with the plot.  This is a mind bender of a story.  It’s a puzzle where you learn part of the ending in the beginning and a big chunk of what the middle is about early on, yet you still have no idea exactly what is going to happen.

Characters are weaved into this story, telling their parts from there POV which makes it all the more interesting.  The author really gets each character and their struggle into your bones.  You want to know how this is all going to turn out and you find yourself rooting for your favorites.

What do I have to say, I am so impressed with this author and her range of storytelling.  Not all authors can cross over especially into thrillers and do it well.  If you like this genre, you should check it out.  There is bits of romance in the story, but obviously thrillers like urban fantasy genre, romance is not the key here.

INTERVIEW

I'd like to welcome H.D. Gordon to My Book Boyfriend blog.  Thanks for coming and sharing a little with us.

1. First I'd like to ask you what was your inspiration for this story?

Hmm, that's a difficult question to answer. Inspirations seems to come from everywhere and from nowhere at the same time. I knew only that I wanted to write something different and completely original, and I am happy to say that I think I accomplished that with Joe. The idea started small. All I knew was that my heroine was clairvoyant, and she was going to have a "vision" of someone shooting up the college university that she attends. My mother gave me idea to write the story from not only the prospective of Joe and the psychopath, but of the potential victims of the shooting. My mother is really the only person I consult regarding story development, and with this particular book, she really helped out. She gave me an idea, and I ran with it. Really, really, ran with it.

2. Would you consider this a stand alone book or a part of a series.

This book can absolutely stand alone. It is a complete story with a beginning, middle and end. But, there is endless material, given the nature of the heroine and her gift, to write more stories about Joe. I have a feeling that another Joe-book will be in the works sometime in 2013.

3.  What would you say is different between this book and your Alexa Montgomery series? 

Different? Everything. First, I should say that this is NOT a young adult novel. In fact, if you are a parent, and your teenager has read my Alexa series and wants to pick up Joe, I would advise you to read it first, and then decide for yourself if you think they should read it. Personally, I don't believe in restricting reading material, but I am well aware that not everyone shares that opinion. I really took a step in a different direction in Joe , and I gotta tell you, I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome. Whereas Alexa is hard-headed and formidable physically, Joe has only her "gift" and her brains to see her through the problems she faces. They are both brave and heroic and altruistic, but that's about as far as the similarities go.

4. What would you say is your next project?

I am happy to say that my next project will be the third book in The Alexa Montgomery Series. While writing Joe, Alexa was constantly interrupting me to discuss her story.  Apparently, she's ready to tell it. Good thing for her, now I am, too.

5. I'm sure this quesion is a biggy for all your fans.  Will you have any more releases out this year, 2012?

Oh, yes, two more titles will be released this year, which will make for a total of four books this year. Whew, that's a book every three months. But, I love my work, and though I assure you that it is a struggle at times, there isn't anything in the world I would rather be doing. I take my craft very  seriously, and I learn new things every day. The third Alexa book is next on the list (will be released sometime this coming August) and after that I will probably write the fourth book in that series. I can't make any promises, though. I have no control over what I write. I write only what I feel I must.

       

6. Lastly, what is the one thing you want people to know about you?

One thing... I'm not in this for the money. It would be an outright lie to say that the money isn't nice, because it is,  and it has allowed me to write full-time. The reason I do this is because I have an obsession with words- an immense love, if you will. My craft is extremely important to me, and I take the words and the story very seriously. Words and story, that's my obsession. That's what it's all about for me. The money is just the cherry on top.
